2025 Fantasy Outlook
The right-hander turned 41 years old in November and signed with Baltimore for his 18th MLB season after a four-year run in Atlanta. He was a reliable rotation piece during that span and closed out 2024 with a 4.19 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 167:65 K:BB across 165.1 innings. That's only about a half-run higher than the ERA from the prime of his career, and he's made at least 30 starts in each of the past six full-length seasons. Morton lost a little bit of his velocity with an average fastball of 94 mph, and his 23.8 percent strikeout rate was his worst mark since 2015. Father Time is certainly creeping up on Morton, but he's managed to remain an effective back-end starter to this point, and he could provide fantasy managers with some strikeouts and innings if they're comfortable with the age risks. Finally tallies first win
Morton (1-7) earned the win Monday against the Cardinals, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Not only did the veteran right-hander secure his first win, but he also collected his first quality start with this vintage 86-pitch performance. The lone blemish on Morton's outing was a 368-foot, two-run homer off the bat of Pedro Pages in the fifth inning. After pitching to a ghastly 9.38 ERA across his first 31.2 frames, Morton has been better of late, firing a 2.35 ERA and 17:4 K:BB over his last 15.1 innings. The 41-year-old receives a soft matchup for his next start, which currently lines up to be at home against the White Sox this weekend.

Morton continued to fend off Father Time by starting 30 games. He's started at least that many every season since 2018, excluding the truncated 2020 campaign. Morton's control showed signs of age as he posted an 11.6 percent walk rate, the highest since his rookie season. His 25.6 percent strikeout rate dropped a couple of ticks, but it was still within range of the previous few seasons. Morton's elevated walk rate resulted in his highest WHIP since 2012, but Lady Luck was on his side with a low 9.4 percent home run per fly ball rate and a 77.6 percent left on base mark, keeping his ERA in check, albeit at least half a run below the associated estimators. Morton's didn't lose any velocity, but it's still fair to be worried about his spike in control. Atlanta isn't concerned as they picked up Morton's $20 million team option for his 40-year-old season. Hoping for one more productive season is defensible, but Morton should be considered a luxury item, and not counted on as a staff staple.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Bullpen move not ruled out
Manager Brandon Hyde said Tuesday that "anything is on the table" when asked about the possibility of Morton being shifted to the bullpen, reports Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com.
ANALYSIS
Morton has been miserable in his first five starts of 2025 with a 10.89 ERA and 21:15 K:BB across 20.2 innings, and he likely would have been dumped from the rotation already if not for the plethora of injuries Baltimore is dealing with. The only relief appearance of the 41-year-old's MLB career came when he was a rookie in 2008. Hyde indicated the Orioles won't make any rotation decisions until after the current series against the Nationals wraps up Thursday.
