Berrios won 50 percent of his starts for a 74-win team in 2024, so naturally, the regression monster came for him and he won just 9 of his 30 starts for the team that came within a centimeter of winning the World Series. Berrios has thrown more innings than any other pitcher since the start of the 2019 season, besting Zack Wheeler by one inning. The mileage is beginning to show on his arm as the average velocity on his four-seamer has declined 1.3 MPH from just two seasons ago while his sinker is down another 1.6 MPH. What Berrios lacks in velocity these days, he makes up with guile throwing 4-5 pitches to both sides of the plate and still has solid whiff rates on his slurve and changeups. The home run issue is here to stay as 2017 was the only season in which Berrios had a HR/9 below 1.0, so expectations of a sub 3.50 ERA would be unwise. The challenge he ran into in 2025 before being shut down with right elbow inflammation was a high (for him) 8.0% walk rate, which combined with his gopheritis, pushed his ERA over 4.00 for the first time in three seasons. He was left off the postseason roster with the elbow issue, so check in on that before pulling this trigger. Read Past Outlooks
