Cortes couldn't avoid the injury bug last season, as he made only two early-season starts for Milwaukee before landing on the injured list due to a left elbow strain. The veteran hurler was traded to San Diego in the midst of his recovery and finally returned to action after missing three months. Cortes was ineffective during his stint with the Padres, posting a 5.47 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 21:13 K:BB over 26.1 innings spanning six starts. Cortes was hurt again late in the campaign and ultimately needed surgery to address a tendon tear in his throwing arm. The procedure is likely to sideline Cortes for at least the first half of the 2026 campaign, and he may not sign with an organization until the late stages of his recovery. The left-hander could have some appeal as a late-season waiver addition in fantasy depending on where he lands, but he's probably not worth stashing in leagues with limited IL slots.
