2025 Fantasy Outlook
Diaz's performance was rocky at times in 2024, but his stability as the Reds closer was always high. The right-hander finished with 28 saves in 32 chances and a 77.8 percent team save share, both of which ranked ninth in the league. The velocity on his four-seamer (94 mph) dipped for the second consecutive year, but the pitch yielded better results than his slider, which was reflected in its usage (58 percent - a +9.5% difference from 2023). Diaz's perennially poor walk rate (12.8 percent) and plummeting K-rate (22.7 percent) attributed to a higher WHIP (1.30), which may not sit well with new manager Tito Francona. However, working in Diaz's favor for 2025 is the current lack of competition within his own bullpen. He'll likely open the season as Cincinnati's closer, but his leash may not be as long as it was under David Bell. Read Past Outlooks

The Dodgers recalled Diaz from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
Analysis
With Tanner Scott set to miss at least the next 15 days with elbow inflammation, Diaz will come up from the minors to claim the open bullpen spot. The 28-year-old has surrendered eight earned runs in just six MLB innings this season, so he'll likely be reserved for low-leverage situations with the Dodgers despite his previous experience as a closer in Cincinnati.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Diaz emerged last year as one of the best closers for fantasy purposes, boasting nine wins and 37 saves with solid ratios and a 30% strikeout rate. While his save total was fourth highest in the majors, Diaz only accounted for 69.8% of the Reds' 53 saves. Cincinnati was more competitive last year, but led the league in one-run games and recorded a save in a league-leading 64.6% of their 82 wins. As such, expecting Diaz to approach the 40-save mark again in 2024 might be a mistake, especially given the 27-year-old's perennially high walk rate. Diaz did adjust his pitch usage, opting to throw far more sliders (51.5% usage) than he did in 2022 (35.2%). It was one of the best sliders in baseball per Statcast Run Value (16), while his four-seamer lost some velocity (-1.2 mph) and wasn't as effective. Diaz also faded down the stretch, possibly due to a career-high 71 appearances. Look for him to be one of the top 10 closers off the board, but don't lock in a repeat of last season's stats.
