Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
McCutchen re-signed with the Pirates on a modest one-year deal and projects to slot into the DH role in 2025. His 105 wRC+ from 2024 indicates that he's still performing at a high level even entering his age-38 season, yet signs of decline are still apparent. A primary concern is bat speed. The most straightforward illustration of that is his strikeout rate jumped to a career-worst 25.8 percent, with his in-zone contact correspondingly tumbling to 80.2 percent. Put another way, his success against fastballs decreased significantly as he posted just a .359 xwOBA against the pitch, with 2022 being the only lower mark of his career. The other major drawback is that McCutchen will only be eligible at utility for fantasy purposes after starting only five games in right field in 2024. Despite those negatives, McCutchen still has a few things going for him. His role in Pittsburgh should be safe after another quiet offseason for the team, and he still gets on base in roughly one-third of his plate appearances. Projecting 15 home runs with a .330 on-base percentage and 110 runs + RBI seems to be a fair baseline expectation, giving McCutchen limited appeal in deeper mixed as well as NL-only formats. Smashes second homer in rout
McCutchen went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and a walk in Tuesday's win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
McCutchen gave the Pirates a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning Tuesday, delivering his second long ball of the campaign. The veteran outfielder's best fantasy days appear to be behind him, but he continues to occupy a premium spot in Pittsburgh's lineup. Through 66 plate appearances, McCutchen is slashing a serviceable .246/.348/.404 with three doubles, nine RBI, eight runs scored and one stolen base.

McCutchen looked rejuvenated early on in his return to Pittsburgh, posting an .823 OPS with eight homers and six steals through the end of May. An elbow injury sent him to the injured list and McCutchen's season ultimately ended in early September due to a partial tear of his left Achilles' tendon. The 37-year-old was in a walking boot for six weeks but the Pirates were happy enough with the reunion and confident enough in his health to bring him back for 2024. A former NL MVP, McCutchen's last All-Star appearance came back in 2015, though the skills have held up OK around the injuries. His strikeout rate still has never exceeded 23 percent and he walked at a 15.9 percent clip last season, the second-highest mark of his career. Unfortunately for those playing fantasy baseball, McCutchen is now UT-only, having made just eight appearances in the outfield last season. He's very much relevant but tougher to roster at this stage of his career given the missed time and lack of positional eligibility.
