Angel Martinez

Angel Martinez

23-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Cleveland Guardians
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Martinez began the 2024 season on the 60-day IL, nursing a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. When healthy, he was assigned to Triple-A Columbus. Looking to spark their offense, the Guardians called up Martinez in early July. He played regularly for a month, posting a .670 OPS, but was sent back to the minors with Lane Thomas and Jhonkensy Noel joining Steven Kwan in the outfield. Martinez is still young, entering his 23-year-old season. He's never been a top prospect, with his chief asset being contact. He doesn't hit the ball with authority and lacks the speed to compensate. His .274/.356/.456 line in 55 games with the Clippers warrants a look in the spring, but Martinez is ticketed to be a versatile reserve, capable of bouncing between the infield and outfield, which seems to be a theme on the Guardians' roster. ANALYSIS
Martinez's two-out, run-scoring single finished off the Guardians' three-run rally in the sixth inning. With Lane Thomas (wrist) on the 10-day injured list, Martinez has taken over the starting job in center field. Martinez has hit safely in seven of 10 games (13-for-36 .361) since his call-up from Triple-A.

This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2021
Martinez does not hit the ball as hard as we would like, but he makes excellent swing decisions for a 20-year-old switch hitter with experience at Double-A. He slashed .278/.378/.471 with a 17.5 K%, 12.0 BB%, 13 home runs and 23 doubles in 101 games between High-A and Double-A. An above-average runner, Martinez went 12-for-19 on stolen-base attempts last season. He primarily played second base at Double-A and saw time at shortstop and third base in the Arizona Fall League. Martinez would benefit from a trade to an organization with less depth, as it is hard to envision him debuting as anything more than a utility infielder with Cleveland. He is already on the 40-man roster, but Martinez is entering his age-21 season, so there is time for him to build upon the .207 ISO he posted in a small sample at Double-A.
The top data point for Martinez is still the impressive 56-game run he had in the Dominican Summer League in 2019. However, reports from the fall instructional league were positive and it seems like this could be a prospect with few flaws. The switch-hitting shortstop walked as much as he struck out in the DSL, showing a strong hit tool and plus speed on the bases. He is well built and athletic, so he won't get the bat knocked out of his hands in the upper levels, yet his speed should age well. We have yet to see the 6-foot Martinez tap into notable over-the-fence power, but he could start showing double-digit homer pop by the time he gets to Double-A or Triple-A. If everything breaks right, Martinez could play every day up the middle while batting first or second in Cleveland's lineup. He is three-plus years away from the majors.
