2025 Fantasy Outlook
After working exclusively as a starter during his 2022 rookie season, Brieske has morphed into a useful swing man for the Tigers the last two seasons. In 2024, he made 46 appearances, which included 12 starts as an opener, and he logged 67.2 innings overall. Brieske posted a solid 3.59 ERA and struck out 69 batters. The righty also managed six holds, four wins and a save in his hybrid role. While Brieske's ability to cover multiple innings out of the bullpen or as a starter is valuable for Detroit, his lack of a regular starting spot does limit his fantasy ceiling to some degree. The 26-year-old could potentially make his way back into the rotation at some point, as the Tigers have several unproven options outside of staff ace Tarik Skubal. Until that happens, Brieske will remain difficult to count on for consistent production out of the bullpen, unless of course he starts seeing more save opportunities in a higher-leverage relief role. Relievers like Luke Jackson of the Rangers are making a strong early impression, but will he be able to keep the closer job all year?

Brad Johnson dives deep into some bullpens in flux, including in Detroit where injured closer Alex Lange needs to work on finding the strike zone once he's back on the mound.

Playing-time patterns are only beginning to emerge on the American League waiver wire, making Heston Kjerstad stand out as a target as he gets his chance with the Baltimore Orioles.

Brad Johnson discusses the starting pitchers on his team in his hometown league, including his No.1 SP, whom he's had for several years, Kodai Senga.
2023 Fantasy Outlook
With Detroit dealing with a number of rotation injuries in 2022, Brieske emerged as a surprisingly solid starter, though he was also shut down in July with forearm soreness. The 24-year-old made his MLB debut in late April and proceeded to record a 4.19 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 81.2 innings. He only had 54 strikeouts, so his ceiling might not be very high unless he can start missing more bats moving forward. Heading into 2023, the Detroit rotation is still in flux. Eduardo Rodriguez missed a good chunk of time last year, but he figures to be the Opening Day starter. Matt Manning should also slot into the rotation along with Spencer Turnbull, who missed all of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery. However, Casey Mize could miss most or all of 2023 due to his own Tommy John surgery, and Tarik Skubal is out for a while following flexor tendon surgery in August. That should put Brieske in a position to start, though he'll likely have to generate more strikeouts to get the attention of fantasy managers.
