2025 Fantasy Outlook
Schmitt opened 2024 in the minors and never received consistent opportunities with the Giants, but he performed well at the plate when called upon with six homers and a .760 OPS in 40 games. He also enjoyed a strong campaign at Triple-A Sacramento, where he had 13 home runs, 11 steals and a .271/.340/.466 slash line in 74 contests. He saw action at second base, third base and shortstop, but all three positions are locked down after San Francisco signed Willy Adames in December. Schmitt should open 2025 as a reserve infielder for the Giants and likely won't have a regular role if the big-league infield stays healthy. Read Past Outlooks

Schmitt has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 oblique strain and is expected to miss one month, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was officially placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, though the extent of the injury wasn't truly known until Monday when he underwent an MRI. This news confirms that he'll miss more than the 10-day minimum and is looking at a potential return in mid-to-late May.

Stat Review
How does Casey Schmitt compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
A second-round pick in 2020, Schmitt was called up for the first time in May as a replacement for Brandon Crawford. Schmitt ended up bouncing between shortstop (42 games), third base (35 games) and second base (19 games), mostly struggling at the plate until the final day of the season when he hit two home runs. He spent some time back at Triple-A in August and September as the team tried to spark the offense later in the year. Among the 328 big leaguers to see 250-plus plate appearances last season, Schmitt ranked 11th worst by wRC+ (59). While he ended the season on a brief high note, Schmitt is not a lock to start the 2024 season with a regular role. His minor-league track record suggests there may be something here, but most will need to see more before rostering him on a fantasy team.
From May 1 on, Schmitt hit .296/.372/.496 with 19 home runs, a 22.6 K% and a 9.6 BB% in 110 games across High-A, Double-A and Triple-A. He is an excellent defensive third baseman, which is a very important part of his dynasty profile, as he might only need to be a league average hitter to play every day in the majors. Schmitt is not on the 40-man roster yet, so he should spend a good portion of his age-24 season back at Triple-A, refining his approach at the plate.

Schmitt will continue to get reps at shortstop and might be a long-term answer there for the Giants, per John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt has primarily played third base since the Giants selected him in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft, but he did see time at short last year in High-A ball and the club's talent evaluators think he has the defensive skills to handle the position. The 24-year-old is on track to make his MLB debut in 2023 after climbing to Triple-A Sacramento for a brief cup of coffee to finish out the 2022 campaign. Maybe he could eventually take over for 36-year-old impending free agent shortstop Brandon Crawford in San Francisco.
