2025 Fantasy Outlook
Vazquez continues to slip at the plate as he had a career-worst .575 OPS and .248 OBP. His walk rate fell to just 3.5% and he also failed to generate power with a .327 SLG. His struggles at the plate are offset by his defense as he graded well in pitch framing (84th percentile according to Baseball Savant) and was ninth in baseball with seven Defensive Runs Saved. Although he had just a .257 BAPIP, it's not a good bet that he'll improve significantly at the plate at age 34. He'll still get significant playing time with the Twins as they split playing time fairly evenly between two catchers to keep both fresh. Read Past Outlooks

Minnesota signed Vazquez to a three-year, $30 million contact before last season to be the team's primary catcher, but he struggled offensively while Ryan Jeffers excelled at the plate. Vazquez hit just .223 with little power (.095 ISO) and a paltry .280 OBA. His underlying metrics were equally poor as he had a career-worst 23.1% K% and was in the bottom 1st percentile in xwOBA. He also can't blame health as he avoided the injured list. The only hope for a rebound is that he's alternated productive and abysmal seasons at the plate throughout his career. Vazquez was a plus with his defense, however, as he was in the 70th percentile in pitch framing (per Baseball Savant) and was 8th among all catchers in DEF (a defensive measure from Fangraphs). The Twins like to utilize two catchers to reduce wear and tear, but Vazquez will likely have a secondary role as Jeffers started every playoff game, signaling Jeffers is now the top option.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Padres talking trade
The Padres and Twins have engaged in trade talks centered around Vazquez, per Dan Hayes and Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Vazquez slashed just .221/.248/.327 across 315 plate appearances last season, so it makes sense that Minnesota would like to move on from the 34-year-old backstop after acquiring Mickey Gasper and Diego Cartaya this winter. Meanwhile, the Padres are thin at catcher beyond Luis Campusano and could benefit from having Vazquez's defensive capabilities on the bench. It's unclear how close the two teams have gotten to a deal, though any trade would likely see Minnesota cover some of the $10 million Vazquez is owed in 2025.
