David Villar

28-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
San Francisco Giants
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Villar made only 11 appearances with the Giants, all in June and July. His .802 OPS with Triple-A Sacramento came at one of the more pitching-friendly parks in the PCL, but overall, that's a hitter's environment and Villar's numbers were pedestrian, especially for a 27-year-old spending his third season at the level. He only logged 37 plate appearances with San Francisco. Villar is best suited as a corner infielder, though he can fill in at second. The club fortified its infield, so Villar's best chance at the major league roster is as a reserve, but that's a longshot. Read Past Outlooks

Scores twice in loss
2BSan Francisco Giants
April 23, 2025
Villar went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk during Tuesday's 11-3 loss to the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Villar posted his first extra-base hit of the season, cracking a double into right field in the third before coming around to score the Giants' first run. The 28-year-old infielder will likely continue to receive playing time against lefties, as Casey Schmitt (oblique) is expected to miss about a month. Villar has appeared in two big-league games this season, going 2-for-7 with three runs scored and a 1:1 BB:K.

Stat Review
How does David Villar compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
After mashing 36 home runs between Triple-A Sacramento and the big leagues in 2022, Villar came into 2023 with a clear path to regular at-bats between third base and second base. Unfortunately, he got off to a wretched start, putting up a .558 OPS with a 33 percent strikeout rate through his first 30 games, at which point he was sent back to the minors. Villar never recovered and played sparingly with the Giants the rest of the way. He slugged again last year at Sacramento, but as a 26-year-old in the Pacific Coast League, that should be taken with a grain of salt. At the major-league level, the now-27-year-old has a .683 OPS, a 32.1 percent strikeout rate and a 34.6 percent hard-hit rate. Villar might not figure very prominently in the Giants' plans for 2024.
Villar wasn't a highly-touted prospect when he received his first big-league call-up last July at the age of 25, but he spent most of the remainder of the season in the majors and finished with a .231/.331/.445 slash line (good for a 124 wRC+), homering nine times in 54 games. While that performance suggests he may have been unfairly overlooked, a closer investigation of his numbers raises skepticism. Statcast suggests he got quite lucky, giving him a .189 xBA, with his 32.0 K% the primary culprit. While his contact was infrequent, however, it was at least of fairly good quality, as his 9.1% barrel rate was above-average. He also has a track record of success in the minors, posting a .943 OPS across the two highest levels since the start of 2021. There's at least something there for Villar at the plate, but the total package might not amount to a big-league regular, as he doesn't offer anything on the basepaths and doesn't have a strong defensive reputation.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could return to majors
2BSan Francisco Giants
June 13, 2023
Villar could soon be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento after J.D. Davis suffered an apparent ankle injury during Tuesday's game against the Cardinals, per Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Villar was removed from Sacramento's game Tuesday after Davis exited with the injury. The 26-year-old Villar spent the first six-plus weeks of the season in the majors, but he was demoted in mid-May after he posted a .558 OPS through 30 games. He would likely fill a utility role if he rejoins the big club.
