2025 Fantasy Outlook
Rasmussen has now overcome three elbow surgeries in his collegiate and professional pitching career over a span of just seven seasons, meaning he is essentially now pitching on borrowed time. Rasmussen has dreams of returning to the starting rotation where he pitched very well in 2022 and early 2023 before his most recent injury. Yet, his body of work out of the bullpen continues to be impressive. Rasmussen averaged 97.4 mph with his fastball and generated a 30.8 percent whiff rate with the pitch along with whiff rates of greater than 40 percent with both his cutter and sweeper. For context, none of Rasmussen's pitches eclipsed even a 30 percent whiff rate in 2023 and just two of them barely did so in 2022. Pete Fairbanks remains under contract for another season, so a closer role may not be immediately open for Rasmussen, but Fairbanks has yet to make it through a season healthy. Rasmussen fits nicely into the "draft skills, not roles" mold. Read Past Outlooks

Takes loss despite strong outing
Rasmussen (1-1) took the loss against the Yankees on Friday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out seven across 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Rasmussen put together another strong performance Friday, tossing 84 pitches (58 strikes) while generating 17 whiffs and fanning seven batters for a second straight game. The RBI single that he gave up to Trent Grisham in the second inning was Rasmussen's only blemish, but he still came away with the loss due to the lack of run support from the Tampa Bay offense. Rasmussen has allowed only two runs across his four outings and sports a 0.82 WHIP and 22:5 K:BB in 20.2 innings. He's in line to face the Diamondbacks on the road next week.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
2021
Rasmussen entered the 2023 season on a bullet train of hype and through eight starts was delivering on that hype with four wins and 47 strikeouts along with a 2.62 ERA. Little did we know that the pitch he threw to induce a Gleyber Torres groundout to complete seven shutout innings at Yankee Stadium would be the last pitch he threw on the season. Rasmussen was diagnosed with a right flexor strain in mid-May and eventually underwent an internal brace surgery to his UCL. It is worth noting that Rasmussen had two TJ surgeries in college as the coaching staff implemented some questionable usage patterns with him, and the list of pitchers successfully recovering from three TJ surgeries is short enough for Mordecai Brown to count with his pitching hand. The internal brace procedure allows for a quicker physical return to the mound, but all the risks of excessive time off with major surgery still apply. Simply put, Rasmussen is a wild card selection for the later rounds.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Passes 100 innings
Rasmussen topped 100 innings for the season in his last start and has thrown 18 more innings this season than any other professional campaign.
ANALYSIS
Rasmussen has thrown 105.1 innings this season, his first year as a full-time starter in the majors. He did toss more innings in 2015 when he completed 106 frames as a 19-year-old at Oregon State but hasn't thrown more than 87.1 innings in any season since. Tampa Bay has already been doing its best to limit Rasmussen's workload as he's tossed more than 89 pitches only twice all season, and he's also been the occasional beneficiary of extra rest. The 27-year-old has a 2.82 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 90:26 K:BB this season and is likely to be an important part of the Rays' potential postseason run.
