2025 Fantasy Outlook
A lefty reliever who turned 25 in December, McDaniels was taken from the Dodgers by the Angels in this offseason's Rule 5 draft. McDaniels opened the year at Single-A and finished the year at Double-A, logging a 3.19 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 84 strikeouts in 73.1 innings. McDaniels' strikeout rate trended up against harder competition, jumping from 22.3 percent at Single-A to 32.4 percent at High-A and then 46.2 percent in a brief three-inning run at Double-A. He'll need to be kept up in the majors all season, otherwise the Angels would need to return McDaniels to the Dodgers. He spins a couple breaking balls and sits 94-95 mph with his fastball and it's possible the Angels will stretch him back out in 2026 after presumably using him as a lefty reliever in 2025. Unable to rescue starter
McDaniels tossed one-third of an inning against the Astros on Friday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk.
ANALYSIS
The Angels were down just one run when McDaniels entered in the fifth frame, but starter Jack Kochanowicz had loaded the bases with two outs after already having given up two runs in the inning. McDaniels had a chance to stem the tide, but he instead gave up a grand slam to Yainer Diaz on the third pitch he threw. The lefty hurler allowed two more baserunners before getting out of the frame, and though only one run was charged to his line, it was a rough outing for the rookie. McDaniels has been working in middle relief for the Angels this season and has a 6.23 ERA, 2.54 WHIP and 4:5 K:BB through 4.1 frames so far.
