2025 Fantasy Outlook
Leiter had some incredible moments in 2024, including a start Aug. 15 for Triple-A Round Rock where he struck out 11 batters for all the outs in a 3.2-inning start, and when he tied a record for most whiffs (20) by a Rangers starter 25 or under against the Angels on Sept. 7, but he was consistently inconsistent. Leiter logged three or more walks in 12 of his 22 starts and had three minor-league starts where he failed to get out of the second inning and another at the big-league level. He gave up five or more runs in four of his nine MLB appearances. His upper-90s fastball is a menacing pitch (133 Stuff+) that lends itself to moments of brilliance, but his command is poor enough that he can get chased early against any opponent. Leiter's name value, draft pedigree (second overall pick in 2021) and pure stuff will keep the acquisition cost a little higher than the results warrant. There's clear bullpen risk, ratio risk and an unpredictable nature that can lead to a miserable fantasy experience, but there's also breakout potential if he can improve his command and overall mindset on the mound. Set for rehab start Tuesday
PTexas Rangers
Finger
April 20, 2025
Leiter (finger) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Leiter landed on the injured list April 4 due to a blister on his right middle finger and is already eligible for activation, but he'll get in at least one rehab outing before rejoining the Rangers' rotation. The right-hander started the season strongly before the blister popped up, as he allowed just one earned run and posted a 10:1 K:BB over 10 innings across his first two starts, each of which resulted in a win. If Leiter's rehab start Tuesday goes well, he could be back in the major-league rotation as soon as next Sunday against San Francisco, per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.

Stat Review
How does Jack Leiter compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.
  • Swinging Strike
The percentage of pitches that result in a swing and a miss.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
There was no analytical reason to remain optimistic with Leiter after his consistently poor 2022 season, when his last name and draft pedigree were doing all the heavy lifting with his prospect value. After a second poor season at Double-A, there remains little to get excited about, although he did at least have multi-start stretches of success in his age-23 season. Leiter had a strong 31.3 percent strikeout rate, but his walk rate was over 13 percent for the second year in a row. The best stretch of Leiter's pro career was a 40.1-inning run with a 2.68 ERA and 1.09 WHIP from early-May through mid-June. However, after turning in two abysmal starts in the middle of the season, Leiter was placed on the developmental list for seven weeks as he worked on his mechanics. He excelled in four appearances (16.1 innings) at Double-A after returning late in the year before getting lit up in his lone Triple-A start to close the season. The consistent factor in Leiter's success or failure is his walk rate. He at least showed flashes of starter-level command last season, but he turns 24 in April and has a career 1.51 WHIP in 177.2 innings.
If Leiter had a different last name and draft pedigree, he would be a free agent in many dynasty leagues. He wasn't bad at everything, but he also wasn't good at anything in his 92.2-inning pro debut at Double-A. His 10.6 K/9 ranked 26th among Double-A pitchers with 70-plus innings, but it was an elevated mark because he was walking so many batters (5.4 BB/9), and therefore getting more opportunities per inning to strike hitters out. In a more useful statistic (K%), Leiter ranked 43rd among that same subset, and his 13.2 BB% was the 13th-worst mark among Double-A starters. There isn't a single stretch in Leiter's season where we can cherry-pick a run of success, and he was supposed to be an advanced starter who could move quickly through the minors. Given his pedigree, Leiter will be given more opportunities to succeed than the average minor-leaguer, but any positivity going forward is just a call-back to his impressive college resume at Vanderbilt.
As with many college pitchers, Leiter did not pitch after getting drafted second-overall by the Rangers and signing for the richest bonus ($7.922 million) in the class. Well-known for his bloodlines (father Al pitched in the majors for 19 years) and dominance at Vanderbilt, Leiter could be the first starting pitcher from this class to reach the majors. Statistically, none of his peers can touch him. The draft-eligible sophomore had a 2.13 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 179:45 K:BB in 110 innings (18 starts). He had a 15-strikeout game during the College World Series, which is the second-most strikeouts of all time from an SEC pitcher in a CWS game. It all starts with his 70-grade fastball, which sits in the low-to-mid-90s but plays well above that velocity thanks to excellent rising action and maximum extension from a 6-foot-1 frame. He throws a curveball, slider and changeup, but none of his offspeed pitches project to be in the same class as his fastball, which limits his realistic upside. Pitchability and competitiveness are strong traits for Leiter, so he is a decent bet to get the most out of his tools, but there is not much projection remaining. He is the rare pitching prospect who could require fewer than 20 starts in the minors before making his big-league debut.

Could work in relief
PTexas Rangers
August 18, 2024
Rangers GM Chris Young indicated Leiter could be called up to work out of the bullpen in September to get him more big-league experience, reports Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old received his first taste of the majors during the spring and allowed 17 earned runs over 9.1 frames in three starts. However, Leiter has enjoyed a solid campaign at Triple-A Round Rock and has a 3.66 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 101:34 K:BB across 71.1 innings, and another look in the big leagues down the stretch could be beneficial heading into 2025.
