Analysis
Woodford came on in the eighth inning with the Diamondbacks leading, 1-0. After getting the first batter to ground out, he gave up a walk and then hung a sweeper to Brice Matthews, who hammered it into the seats in left field for a two-run home run. Woodford stayed in for the ninth, gave up a pair singles and was charged with Houston's final run. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo had already used Kevin Ginkel, perhaps the team's highest-leverage arm, to get out of the seventh inning and had to adapt in the later innings. Woodford has appeared in five games since joining the team earlier this month and has a 4.35 ERA with six strikeouts and four walks over 10.1 innings.

Woodford has operated in a swingman role for the Cardinals during his three seasons, drawing the occasional spot start but mostly being reserved for long relief. He's been reasonably effective in both roles, most recently putting up a 2.23 ERA across 27 appearances - one start - in 2022. Woodford's already-low strikeout rate bottomed out to just 12.8 percent last season, but he combated that with a career-high 52 percent ground ball rate and he continued to do a good job throwing strikes. It's possible the right-hander could carve out some single-league value if he garners more than a few starts, but he looks to be pretty far down the rotation pecking order again.
