2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Oviedo had a successful return from Tommy John surgery in 2025, immediately sitting in his normal velocity range with his fastball while also ending the season healthy. His results were also mostly positive, as he allowed more than two earned runs in only one of his nine starts. Those results were backed by strong peripherals, though it is worth taking Oviedo's career-best 24.7 percent strikeout rate with a grain of salt, considering he threw more than 5.0 innings only once and almost never faced an opposing lineup for a third time. The other concern was Oviedo's spiked walk rate, which has been a problem throughout his career and was likely worsened in 2025 due to the long layoff. A trade early in the offseason to Boston should provide him some security in role, as he'll slot into the middle of the rotation. Durability and walks are a concern entering 2026, but Oviedo should have the chance to pitch to around a 4.00 ERA while striking out close to a better per inning, and he could be in line for some additional win potential by shifting from Pittsburgh's supporting cast to Boston's. Another strong outing
Oviedo allowed two hits and struck out four over 3.1 scoreless innings in Saturday's spring start against the Rays.
Analysis
After a wild, rocky start to the Grapefruit League, Oviedo has impressed in two subsequent outings and is the frontrunner for Boston's final rotation spot. That first spring appearance, when the right-hander walked three and hit a batter, has been followed by 6.1 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and zero walks.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
2021
Oviedo missed all of the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. It was a disappointing setback after showing he showed signs of promise across 32 starts in 2023, allowing two or fewer earned runs on 18 occasions. On the other hand, he still experienced plenty of inconsistency, as he also allowed five or more earned runs on six occasions. The primary culprit for that inconsistency is Oviedo's lack of control (10.6 BB% in 2023), something that is only likely to worsen upon his return to the mound due to his long layoff. Another concern is his usage in 2025, as the strength of the Pirates' roster is their pitching staff. That could set Oviedo up to pitch out of the bullpen or to begin the season in the minors as he has one remaining option available.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Drawing trade interest
The Pirates have received trade interest in Oviedo, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic report.
Analysis
Oviedo missed all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and most of 2025 after suffering a right lat strain, but he pitched well down the stretch, posting a 3.57 ERA and 42:23 K:BB over 40.1 innings covering nine starts. The Pirates are likely to trade a starter in exchange for offensive help, though Mitch Keller is seen as the likeliest to be dealt since he's owed $54.5 million over the next three seasons. Oviedo is projected to make around $2 million in 2026 and will be under team control in 2027, as well.
