2025 Fantasy Outlook
Miranda resurrected his career after an injury-plagued 2023 season and put himself in position for an everyday role in 2024. Miranda hit just .211 with a .565 OPS in 2023 as he struggled with right shoulder issues that required offseason surgery to remove scar tissue from his labrum and rotator cuff. He began last season in the minors, but caught fire when called up in April by hitting .313 with nine home runs and an .852 OPS in his first 90 games, which included tying a major-league record by recording a hit in his 12 consecutive at-bats in early July. Like the rest of the Twins, he struggled the final six weeks by hitting .202 with a .491 OPS in his last 30 games, in part due to a back injury that required an IL stint. Miranda makes good contact due to a low strikeout rate (15.4%) and he was in the 83rd percentile in Squared-Up Rate (according to Baseball Savant). He didn't hit for as much power as in his breakout 2022 season, but may have been unlucky with a 6.3% HR/FB rate. His defense at third base has been mediocre to below average by most metrics and he doesn't hit for enough power to justify everyday duty at first base or DH. Still, he'll be in the mix for frequent duty at both corner spots again with the Twins as part of the infield mix. Read Past Outlooks

Triple-A St. Paul placed Miranda on its 7-day injured list Tuesday due to a left hand strain, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old was optioned to Triple-A over the weekend but will shift to the injured list before seeing game action with St. Paul. According to Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star Tribune, Miranda suffered the injury on St. Paul's off day Monday while he was shopping and grabbing for a case of water. Miranda had hit just .167 over 12 games with the Twins prior to his demotion.

Stat Review
How does Jose Miranda compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Miranda failed to capitalize on an opportunity to win an everyday role with the Twins amid a shoulder issue and his future role with the organization isn't clear. Despite dealing with a sore shoulder in spring training, Miranda began the season as Minnesota's everyday third baseman. He struggled and was soon sent to Triple-A on May 10 after hitting just .220/.275/.318. Miranda wasn't much better at Triple-A, where he hit just .255/.326/.360 in 39 games. His shoulder issues soon resurfaced and he had season-ending surgery in September. Miranda was a late bloomer in the minors where he hit .344/.401/.572 with 30 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A in 2021 at age 23. He then hit .287 with a .797 OPS in his final 106 games in 2022. The above-average power he displayed in 2022 cratered in 2023 (just a .092 IS0) though he maintained a good strikeout rate (15.8% K%). Meanwhile, Royce Lewis returned from a torn ACL and established himself at third base and several other corner infield prospects emerged. He'll need to show his sharp decline last season was due to the shoulder injury in order to factor into the corner infield mix again.
Miranda had an impressive rookie season by hitting 15 home runs with a .751 OPS, showing his late-blooming minor league career was no fluke. Miranda hit .344/.401/.572 with 30 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A in 2021 at age 23, but began 2022 in the minors. He was called up in early May, but hit just .164/.200/.284 in 19 games and was sent back down. Given a second chance when called up at the end of May, he caught fire and hit .287 with a .797 OPS in his final 106 games, splitting time between third base and first base and becoming a regular in the lineup. Miranda features above average power (55th percentile Avg. Exit Velocity and 63rd percentile Hard Hit rate) with strong contact rates (79.5%) and above-average strikeout rates (18.5%). He's a below-average glove at third base, which could hinder him from finding a regular spot in the lineup without the premium power needed at first base or DH. Still, Miranda has enough of a well-rounded skill set at the plate to find his way into regular playing time.
Miranda will be an excellent test case in the value of raw minor-league production. His numbers from 2021 as a 23-year-old at Double-A and Triple-A were unassailable. He hit .344/.401/.572 with 30 home runs, a 12.5 K% and a 7.1 BB%, yet traditional scouts inside and outside the organization aren't sold that he is an everyday player in the majors. It doesn't help that he is a subpar defender at every position on the diamond and is generally a bad athlete who won't contribute on the bases, so his bat needs to carry the day. He was a borderline top-200 prospect from the 2017-18 offseason until early 2019, but a poor showing as a 21-year-old at High-A (.663 OPS) led to him falling off the top 400 prospect rankings and obviously he was out of sight and out of mind in 2020. If Miranda struck out at a higher clip, it would be easier to write him off as a likely Quad-A bat, but his combination of contact skill and game power could allow him to get regular playing time despite the other weaknesses in his game. An injury to any number of big-league regulars could lead to him getting an audition sometime this season.

Minnesota could mull trade
3BMinnesota Twins  AAA
November 14, 2024
The Twins could listen to trade offers for Miranda this offseason, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Since Miranda is not yet arbitration-eligible and under team control through 2028, there is no rush to trade him unless the Twins are bowled over by an offer. However, Minnesota has a bevy of infield options so it's possible Miranda has more value as a trade piece. The 26-year-old slashed .284/.322/.441 with nine home runs over 121 contests in 2024.
