Jose Tena

24-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Washington Nationals
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Acquired from Cleveland last year in the Lane Thomas deal, Tena got a look in Washington over the final two months, mostly at third base (35 games). He smacked a walk-off hit in his team debut Aug. 10 and finished with a respectable .274 average, three homers and six steals in seven attempts across 164 plate appearances for the Nationals. Tena has some speed and has reached double-digit homers in the minor leagues several times, but it will be tough for him to stick at the hot corner long term given the general offensive expectations at the position. Realistically, he may be best suited for a utility role, but as he enters his age-24 season in 2025, Tena appears tentatively set for an extended audition as a lineup regular between third base and second base. Three XBH in Tuesday's win
3BWashington Nationals
April 23, 2025
Tena went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and a run scored in Tuesday's 7-0 win over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
The Nats scalded the ball all night, with 10 of their 14 hits going for extra bases in a 7-0 rout, and Tena led the way with three of them. The 24-year-old has started three of the last four games, and with Washington looking to get some production from the hot corner, manager Dave Martinez suggested after Tuesday's contest that Tena could move into a strong-side platoon role at third base while Paul DeJong (nose) remains on the shelf, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Tena climbed three levels in 2023, culminating in his major league debut receiving 34 plate appearances and slashing .226/.294/.290 in 18 games played. Tena's bat played much better in both Double-A and Triple-A, combining for 35 extra base hits, eight of which were home runs, and 16 steals across the two levels of the minors. If the 22-year-old breaks camp with Cleveland, he should be viewed as a utility option at best with the capability of playing multiple infield roles, but no clear path to starting at any of them.
