2025 Fantasy Outlook
The A's spent on a new ace in Luis Severino and traded for Jeffrey Springs from Tampa Bay, but before that, Sears looked like the de facto 2025 Opening Day starter. After all, he led the team in innings and wins among other categories last season. Sears is a lefty with five different pitches, but he's never shown much of a strikeout punch against big-league hitters. To his credit he rarely shoots himself in the foot with walks, and he's been a workhorse in recent years with 353 total innings over the past two seasons. Complicating matters is the move to West Sacramento. Pitching in a PCL park will likely be tough, dinging the home streaming appeal. Read Past Outlooks

Five solid innings in third win
Sears (3-2) grabbed the win against the Rangers on Wednesday after allowing two runs on five hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Staked to an early 5-0 lead, Sears hurled five solid innings but did struggle a bit with hard contact. The left-hander allowed a pair of doubles Wednesday and a solo home run to Wyatt Langford in the fourth frame, throwing a season-low 86 pitches as well. Sears still hasn't given up greater than three runs in any of his first five starts of 2025, and he'll carry 3.21 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB over 28 innings into his next scheduled outing against these same Rangers, this time in Texas.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Acquired from the Yankees in August of 2022 as part of the Frankie Montas trade, Sears led the Oakland clubhouse in innings last year by a significant margin and was the only A's pitcher trusted to make more than 22 starts. That isn't saying much given the company he kept in what was the worst rotation in the American League, but Sears averaged nearly a strikeout per inning and would seem to have the arsenal to generate even more swing-and-misses moving forward. His four-seamer, slider and changeup all rated as better-than-average offerings in 2023, and his sweeper had a whiff rate of 30.0 percent. Somewhat surprisingly, it was left-handed hitters who did the most damage against him, even as a southpaw. Call that an aberration and see if he can take another leap forward in 2024 as a late-round fantasy flier.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Likely sticking in Oakland
The Athletics aren't expected to seriously entertain trade offers for Sears this summer, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN.com.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander posted a 4.54 ERA in his first full season as an MLB starter in 2023, and he's taken a step forward this year with a 3.93 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 53:21 K:BB over 73.1 innings. Sears won't be arbitration eligible until 2026, so Oakland is looking to keep him as a key piece of the rotation, at least for the foreseeable future.
