2025 Fantasy Outlook
Waldichuk was slated to begin the season on the 60-day IL as he was still recovering from a Tenex procedure and PRP injection on his left UCL and flexor tendon performed in late October 2023. Unfortunately, Waldichuk suffered a setback in late April, resulting in Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure. The southpaw hopes to return sometime in the second half. Historically, command and control are slow to return after surgery of this nature, and those are Waldichuk's main pitfalls. Activated, optioned to Triple-A
The Athletics activated Waldichuk (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Saturday and optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Analysis
Waldichuk underwent Tommy John surgery last May and had spent all season on the injured list up to this point. He kicked off a minor-league rehab assignment in late June and tallied a 7.63 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 17:16 K:BB over 15.1 innings spanning six appearances between Single-A Stockton and Las Vegas. The lefty threw 141 frames for the Athletics in 2023 and could certainly make his way back to the big club in due time, but he'll likely first need to harness his control issues in the minors before getting a look in the MLB rotation.

Waldichuk's first full season in the majors was largely forgettable, as he finished with a 5.36 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 132:71 K:BB across 141 innings. The 26-year-old lefty primarily worked as a starter but also operated behind an opener (22 starts in 36 appearances). His first 10 outings of the season were a disaster with 40 earned runs allowed in 48.2 frames, but he pitched much better the rest of the way and had a 3.42 ERA in his final 10 outings, though he also had a 4.74 FIP. Waldichuk had a 1.5 HR/9 for the season and a still-high 1.4 mark down the stretch, which was accompanied by a total walk rate of 11.1 percent. He doesn't have an established floor and it was revealed this offseason that he has a UCL sprain and flexor strain, so he needs to show he's healthy in the spring to be mildly appealing as a home streamer in the deepest of leagues.

According to Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle, Waldichuk could be re-inserted into Oakland's rotation as a sixth starter during the team's upcoming road trip, which begins Friday and runs through June 11.
