2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gausman had a health scare during spring training when he developed a shoulder problem, which caused him to slide in some fantasy drafts. The right-hander avoided the injured list, however, and ultimately made 31 starts and threw 181 innings for the Blue Jays. Unfortunately, Gausman didn't look like the same guy, with his strikeout rate plummeting nearly 10 percentage points down to 21.4 percent. His velocity fluctuated from start to start and was down almost a full mph overall, and Gausman also didn't have the same feel for his trademark splitter, seeing his whiff rate on the pitch drop to easily a career-low 33.5 percent. Gausman did have three 10-strikeout games in 2024, offering hope that the swing-and-miss is still in there. However, it's fair to wonder whether he can rediscover it on a consistent basis in his age-34 season. Read Past Outlooks
Pitches well in tough loss
Gausman (2-2) took the loss against the Dodgers on Saturday in Game 2 of the World Series, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out six batters over 6.2 innings.
Analysis
Gausman gave up a run on a pair of two-out hits in the first inning, then settled in to retire 17 straight batters. That streak was broken when Will Smith tagged him for a solo homer in the seventh inning, and Max Muncy followed suit with his own solo blast two batters later. That spelled the end of Gausman's outing, and he ended up with the loss as Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto spun a one-run, complete-game gem. Gausman did log his longest career postseason outing and was efficient in throwing 59 of 82 pitches for strikes while registering a quality start. He figures to start again in Game 6 if the series gets to that point.

Gausman has established himself as one of the game's best starting pitchers on the strength of his trademark splitter. His first season with Toronto in 2022 was a rousing success even as he endured some tough luck on balls in play. He followed up with an even better campaign at age 32, leading the American League in strikeouts with 237 while finishing seventh among qualified starters with a 3.16 ERA. The four-seam fastball that sets up his split-finger was more effective last season, and while there was some giveback with his walk rate, Gausman was still stingy in that regard (second in K-BB% behind only Spencer Strider). His early-career struggles between Baltimore, Atlanta and Cincinnati are a distant memory at this point and the team context is a check mark in his favor even in the AL East.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Struggling with fastball
Opposing batters are hitting .322 against Gausman's four-seam fastball through seven starts this season.
Analysis
The 33-year-old has a 3.78 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 31:8 K:BB across 33.1 innings, and those numbers are fortunate given the problems with his fastball, which he's thrown at a 47.4 percent clip. Gausman's splitter, which has 38.8 percent usage, has been dominant, as hitters have a .243 wOBA and two-degree launch angle against it. The right-hander has also introduced a sinker this season, but he appears to still be feeling it out since it's been thrown just 23 times. Gausman's already solid numbers could receive a bump if he's able to use the sinker more and rely less on his fastball.
