2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
In a system that has been ravaged by trades, Mendez is one of the most talented prospects remaining, despite his poor results after getting promoted to Double-A on Aug. 1. The skinny 6-foot-2 righty's fastball regularly touches triple digits, and he has one of the best sliders in the minors, but poor control may push him to relief eventually. Mendez, who turned 23 in July, logged a 1.32 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 70:24 K:BB in 61.1 innings at High-A Fort Wayne. A 15.9 percent walk rate and .346 BABIP contributed to a 8.06 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 22.1 innings at Double-A, and he will return there to start 2026. Mendez's value could rise drastically with a strong showing early in 2026, or he could start looking more and more like a future late-inning reliever. Read Past Outlooks
Sent to Double-A
Mendez was optioned to Double-A San Antonio on Thursday.
Analysis
Mendez made two appearances with the Padres during spring training, giving up six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three batters over two innings. The right-handed pitcher is one of San Diego's top prospects, but he'll need some time in the minor leagues to refine his craft before potentially getting a shot with the big-league squad.

Aces through three levels
Mendez was a breakout prospect in the Padres organization during the 2025 season, according to Jonathan Mayo, Jim Callis and Sam Dykstra of MLB.com.
Analysis
Mendez had the best season of his young career in 2025, showcasing elite stuff over the Single-A, High-A and Double-A levels. He posted a 3.22 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 118 strikeouts over 95 innings between those three levels, and he could move closer to the majors if he's able to repeat those numbers in 2026.
