Rivera had some sneaky NL-only utility during his time in the majors in 2017, but he didn't play in a single major-league game in 2018 as an elbow injury kept him sidelined. Let this be a lesson for all those who assume every Tommy John recovery follows the same path. Rivera was expecting to return from the September 2017 procedure before May, but his rehab assignment was delayed until July and he suffered a setback a little over a week into his minor-league stint. Rivera did not end up returning to a competitive setting. Before the lost season, Rivera had shown stellar bat-to-ball ability (13.9 K%) and a splash of pop (.140 ISO). He doesn't walk much, but he was a slightly-better-than-average hitter over a 231-PA sample in his lone extended look to date. As of mid-January, Rivera still has his 40-man spot with the Mets, but he will be hard pressed to make the Opening Day roster.
