Cedric Coward

22-Year-Old GuardG
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Coward is still recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered in college, which cost him his first Summer League. However, he's expected to be healthy by training camp. The Grizzlies traded up to select Coward at No. 11 in the 2025 NBA Draft, showing how much the organization likes him. However, his path to playing time as a rookie is blocked. Memphis got rid of Desmond Bane, Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia this offseason and brought in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ty Jerome. Vince Williams, Jaylen Wells, GG Jackson, Santi Aldama and John Konchar are also still around and will need minutes on the wings. At 22 years old, Coward is old for a prospect and may have to contribute immediately to fit the NBA development curve. The team still revolves around Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson, so even if Coward beats out the returning group of forwards, he'll be hard-pressed to handle enough usage to be relevant in standard leagues. However, if he carves out 20-plus minutes a night, his all-around skill set makes Coward an intriguing fantasy option. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Cedric Coward is a native of Fresno, California who started his collegiate career in Division III at Willamette University in 2021-22. As a redshirt freshman, he won the Northwest Conference Freshman of the Year and was named to their All-First Team after averaging 19.5 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.5 spg and 2.8 bpg. Coward then transferred to Eastern Washington where he spent the next two years and was awarded with NABC All-District (6) First Team and All-Big Sky First Team honors in 2023-24 as a sophomore. This past year, he transferred to Washington State for his redshirt junior season, but a shoulder injury cost him all but six games. The 6-foot-6, 206 lb wing led the Cougars in points (17.7), rebounds (7.0), blocks (1.7), made 3s (2.0) and PER (24.8) on shooting splits of 55.7 / 40.0 / 83.9. Coward's gameplay stands out for a number of reasons, chief among them being his reliable 3-point shooting stroke (career 38.8 3P%), motor and rebounding. His catch and shoot numbers are impressive (60.0 eFG%), but he also looks comfortable off the dribble, whether it's in the midrange or post area. He has the size and strength to guard up or down, moves his feet well, and displays solid instincts and timing when contesting shots or on closeouts. After showing signs of growth throughout his four years in college, the 21-year-old can do a little bit of everything at a premium position at the next level. Even in the small sample size from 2024-25, Coward looks and plays like a prototypical 3-and-D wing in the modern NBA. He has the size, athleticism, length and a proven ability to knock down shots from behind the arc, something that has become pivotal in today's game. Any team could use his jolt of shooting and the willingness to do whatever it takes to help his squad win. Coward's versatile game resembles something of a connector role, similar to guys like Derrick White, Aaron Wiggins, Max Strus and Aaron Nesmith.

Drains six triples in victory
GMemphis Grizzlies
October 25, 2025
Coward contributed 27 points (9-13 FG, 6-6 3Pt, 3-4 FT), six rebounds, four assists and one steal across 24 minutes in Saturday's 128-103 win over the Pacers.
ANALYSIS
Coward caught fire en route to a game-high 27 points, including 15 in the third quarter alone. The rookie has logged 22-plus minutes in all three of the Grizzlies' games thus far, averaging 19.0 points in 22.7 minutes per contest. He should continue to see significant playing time off the bench with Ty Jerome (calf) and Vince Williams (heel) sidelined.

Could play some power forward
GMemphis Grizzlies
October 3, 2025
Memphis coach Tuomas Iisalo said Thursday that Coward could play some minutes at the four in the early going, according to Fastbreak Breakfast.
ANALYSIS
Iisalo noted that Coward has a chance to size up and play the four because he is "really physical, he is long, strong, and a good rebounder for his position." The Grizzlies are preparing to be very thin in the frontcourt to open the season due to injuries to Jaren Jackson, Brandon Clarke and Zach Edey. Coward missed the Las Vegas Summer League after undergoing shoulder surgery in November of 2024 in college, but it sounds like he could have a chance to play a big role in the preseason as the Grizzlies give him a look in the frontcourt.
