2025 Fantasy Outlook
Murray packed a well-rounded stat line before his season ended abruptly, averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.7 three-pointers per game over 31 starts with 39/30/82 shooting splits. Unfortunately, a non-contact right Achilles tendon tear sustained in late January prematurely ended his 2024-25 campaign. The Pelicans swapped CJ McCollum for Jordan Poole, but when Murray is back at full strength, he will surely reclaim his starting role. Any fantasy managers taking the plunge on Murray may not want to bank on him returning before the new year, just to be safe. Murray offers tantalizing upside because of his triple-double potential that is accompanied by one of the best steal rates in the NBA, and it's fair to expect some positive regression with his jumper -- he's a career 45.3 percent shooter from the field and 34.0 percent from beyond the arc. He's best viewed as a high-upside stash or late-round target in redraft leagues, with much more appeal in dynasty formats where patience and long-term reward are part of the equation. Depending on his ADP, Murray could be a serious value in redraft if he quickly finds his form on the court. Read Past Outlooks
Season debut not imminent
Pelicans interim head coach James Borrego said Sunday that Murray (Achilles) is "making a lot of progress" but doesn't appear to be close to making his season debut, Rod Walker of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. "We hope to get him back in our building here soon. He's doing a lot of work getting ready to get back here," Borrego said of Murray. "I say in the next month we'll have a little bit more clarity on where he's at. But he's made a lot of progress. Significant progress."
ANALYSIS
For his part, Murray -- who underwent surgery Feb. 5, 2025 to address his torn right Achilles tendon -- hasn't provided an update since the Pelicans' media availability day back in September regarding where he stands in his rehab program. The 29-year-old hasn't necessarily hit any snags in his recovery, but Borrego noted that he couldn't "say for sure" that Murray will play any point in 2025-26 until the Pelicans get a chance to evaluate him live on the court during practices or scrimmages. At the very least, Borrego's comment about the Pelicans hoping to have more clarity on Murray's status in the next month would seem to indicate that New Orleans isn't counting on Murray making it back before the All-Star break in mid-February. In the meantime, rookie first-round pick Jeremiah Fears will continue to serve as the Pelicans' starting point guard amid Murray's absence.

After two failed seasons in Atlanta, Murray was traded to New Orleans this offseason. Sharing a backcourt with Trae Young wasn't detrimental to Murray's fantasy value, as the latter finished 23rd in eight-category leagues in 2022-23 and 20th in 2023-24. However, Murray did see a sharp drop in assists. In 2021-22, Murray's final year with the Spurs, he posted a career-high 9.2 dimes per game but dropped to around 6.3 assists per game over his two seasons with the Hawks. Murray will be the Pelicans' lead point guard, pushing CJ McCollum back to his usual shooting guard spot and Brandon Ingram to small forward. In his new role, it's safe to assume Murray could catapult himself up the league-wide assists board again, especially if McCollum, Ingram and Zion Williamson stay healthy. If Murray, who made a career-high 2.6 three-pointers per game in 2023-24, can flirt with 10 assists a night again, a top-10 finish in eight-category leagues is within the realm of possibility. He's also a high-floor option. The 2016 No. 29 overall pick has appeared in at least 66 regular-season games in six straight campaigns, including 78 appearances last season. Murray has first-round upside and a high floor, making him a safe pick in the earlier rounds of fantasy drafts.

Lacking clear target date for debut
Pelicans interim head coach James Borrego said Dec. 19 that Murray (Achilles) is "working his tail off" in his rehab, but the veteran point guard remains without a definitive target date for his 2025-26 debut, Dylan Sanders of Roundtable.io reports. "I can't say where he is on the schedule, I wish I could be more honest about that. He's doing great is what I can say," Borrego said of Murray. "It's impressive how far he's comes, where he's at. He works extremely hard. We'll have him back soon, how soon I don't know. We're working through that right now."

Could return around early January
Murray (Achilles) could be ready to make his season debut shortly after New Year's Day, Shams Charania reported during his appearance Wednesday on ESPN's "NBA Today." "He is making progress. He is doing better. Every single day, he is doing a little more," Charania said. "I would look at right after New Year's as to where Dejounte Murray could pinpoint to make his return."

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Timetable remains murky
Pelicans head coach James Borrego said Murray is making progress from his Achilles tear, but that he remains without an official timetable, Rod Walker of NOLA.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"He's making a lot of progress," Borrego said. "We hope to get him back in our building here soon. He's doing a lot of work getting ready to get back here. I say in the next month we'll have a little bit more clarity on where he's at. But he's made a lot of progress. Significant progress." With the Pelicans sitting in last place in the Western Conference with an 8-29 record, the franchise has no incentive to rush Murray back to the court.
