Heading to NFL
January 18, 2021
Gainwell announced Monday via his personal Twitter account that he will forgo his remaining eligibility at Memphis to enter the 2021 NFL Draft.
ANALYSIS
Gainwell opted out of the 2020 season, but he made a splash as a redshirt freshman in 2019, rushing for 1,459 yards and 13 touchdowns while adding 610 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns as a pass catcher. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Gainwell notably worked ahead of Antonio Gibson, who went on to become a third-round pick of Washington in the 2020 NFL Draft. Gainwell could be headed for a similar placement in the draft, though teams may want to see how he tests during the pre-draft process coming off a lost season. As for Memphis, Rodrigues Clark, Asa Martin, Kylan Watkins and Marquavius Weaver are all candidates to continue to pick up the slack out of the backfield now that Gainwell is officially out of the picture.

2020 Fantasy Outlook
Gainwell burst onto the scene with a dominant 2019 season as a redshirt freshman, showcasing elite rushing and pass-catching ability as he finished fourth in fantasy points among running backs. He was one of just two players with at least 200 carries and 45 targets, joining Eno Benjamin in that class, but Gainwell finished with 1,873 total yards and 15 scores while Benjamin posted just 1,430 on 50 more total touches. Gainwell’s pass-catching ability makes him a top notch fantasy asset -- he not only sees volume in that area, but he provides rare efficiency, too. His 10.0 YPT was the best mark in the nation by almost two full yards among backs with at least 45 targets. And with Memphis bringing its offensive nucleus back, there’s little reason to predict a drop-off for the electric Gainwell.
