Shrader converted only 68.3 percent of field-goal attempts in his college career at USF and Notre Dame, but NFL teams were impressed by his leg strength and took interest in the 2024 UDFA. He ended up kicking for three different teams last season, albeit briefly, going 5-for-5 on field-goal attempts and 9-for-9 on PATs across four games. The Colts signed Shrader to a two-year contract in March and released fellow Matt Gay a month later, putting the second-year pro in good position to handle placekicking duties for a dome team, albeit one that may struggle on offense with Anthony Richardson and/or Daniel Jones playing QB. Will face competition for K job
Shrader and and Maddux Trujillo are in a true competition for the starting placekicker job, special teams coordinator Brian Mason recently told 107.5 FM The Fan in Indianapolis. "Spencer certainly has a little bit of a step up in that. He's already been in the league, already been here, but it is definitely an open competition," said Mason.

He converted all five of his field-goal tries and all nine extra-point attempts across those appearances. The Colts will have a new kicker this season after releasing Matt Gay in April. While Shrader's two-year contract likely indicates he's the favorite, it wouldn't be surprising if Trujillo wins the job or if the team acquires another veteran late in training camp for the job. Shrader has been more accurate on kicks than Maddux Trujillo during training camp practices, Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star reports.
