Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Tuesday that after numerous conversations with Ramsey "we decided it was probably in the best interest for all parties to move forward [separately]", Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Miami has already paid out $4 million of the fully guaranteed $25.1 million that Ramsey is due in 2025 as a roster bonus, while $18.98 million of the remaining amount comes as a bonus due in Week 1 which can be spread across future seasons, making his contract relatively trade-friendly. Ramsey played all 17 regular-season games for the Dolphins in 2024 and remained a high-end starter, though failed to earn a Pro Bowl nod for the first time since his rookie year. There should be no shortage of teams interested in trading for Ramsey, though in the event that no deal can be worked out, Grier said "if he's here, we'll deal with it."

Though Ramsey is entering his age-30 season and was only able to suit up for 10 games in 2023, he remains a reliable option at cornerback and a pillar of Miami's secondary. Even if Ramsey has lost a step, the signing of Kendall Fuller from Washington sets up the Dolphins to field one of the league's best cornerback duos on the perimeter. That will need to be the case, given that this defense is looking to replace longtime standout Xavien Howard, and could be without Bradley Chubb early in the 2024 regular season while he recovers from an ACL tear.
However Miami managed it, acquiring Ramsey in exchange for a third-round pick and a depth tight end looks like an absolute bargain. The perennial Pro Bowler is coming off back-to-back offseasons requiring shoulder procedures, the left side in 2022 and the right side in 2023, but he's nonetheless expected to be a full go for the regular season. Even if Ramsey has lost a step, which isn't guaranteed to be the case, pairing him with Xavien Howard and Jevon Holland should give the Dolphins one of the league's few top-notch secondaries, a dangerous complement to an already high-flying offense.
Ramsey turned in a second straight First-team All-Pro campaign with a 77tackle season, 16 pass defenses and four interceptions, while spreading out all over the field for defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Still in his prime as a premier shutdown corner, Ramsey's vocal leadership will be relied upon even more with the departure of Darious Williams and a young cornerback group waiting in the wings, which could lead to another uptick in fantasy production.
Ramsay turned in his fourth consecutive Pro-Bowl campaign and was also named to the All-Pro team for the second time in his career in 2020. He shifted to a rover-type role as the "star" of the Rams defense and recorded 44 tackles (36 solo), an interception and nine pass defenses. However, his on-field performance doesn't equate to reliable fantasy production. Ramsey has never been one of the best IDP options at his position due to his status as a true shutdown corner.
There's no comparison between Ramsey's on-field play and fantasy value. Despite being to three consecutive Pro Bowls, the 25-year-old cornerback has never been a go-to fantasy contributor and projects to be a boom-or-bust producer again in 2020. So, even though Ramsey is likely to be one of the best shut-down corners in the league, he's an afterthought outside of the deepest IDP settings.
Ramsey continued the stellar start to his career with his second Pro Bowl nod in 2018, as he recorded 65 tackles (62 solo) with 13 passes defensed and three interceptions in 16 games. The 24-year-old has been a model of consistency with his production with at least 60 tackles and 13 pass breakups while not missing a game through his first three seasons. Ramsey figures to be a true shutdown cornerback once again in 2019 and will without a doubt have All-Pro aspirations after missing out last season. Partnered with A.J. Bouye, the two are likely to form one of the premier cornerback tandems in the NFL.
Ramsey has wasted little time making his impact known across the NFL, quickly becoming one of the best cover corners in the league. The 23-year-old recorded 63 tackles in 2017 with 17 pass breakups and four interceptions. The presence of A.J. Bouye opposite Ramsey gives the Jaguars arguably the top cornerback tandem in the league, and makes it exceedingly difficult for opposing quarterbacks to avoid throwing at either corner. There's no reason to believe Ramsey won't continue to improve in year three.
As a rookie, Ramsey lived up to expectations as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2016 draft, starting all 16 games and recording 65 combined tackles and a pair of interceptions. The 22-year-old is widely considered one of the best young defensive backs in the NFL, and he’ll team with free agent signee A.J. Bouye to form a talented cornerback tandem.
The consensus best defensive back in the draft falling to the Jaguars at No. 5 may have been an act of divine intervention. The secondary has long been a liability in Jacksonville, and Ramsey is projected to step in as a starter right away, even after tearing his meniscus during rookie minicamp in May. Ramsey is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, so he shouldn’t miss any meaningful snaps.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Will have new home in 2025
CBMiami Dolphins
April 15, 2025
Ramsey and the Dolphins will mutually part ways this offseason, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It was originally speculated that Ramsey requested a trade, though general manager Chris Grier framed the decision as being in the best interest of all parties. Though he's not the same dynamic player that he was in his prime, Ramsey was still on the field for 974 defensive snaps and was credited with 11 passes defended including two interceptions over 17 regular-season games in 2024. However, with the Dolphins in a tough cap situation, moving on from Ramsey should help in the long term even if a deal doesn't offer significant relief in the short term.
