Rest-of-Season Projections
On to professional ranks
Simpson officially declared for the 2026 NFL Draft on Tuesday, Colin Gay of The Tuscaloosa News reports.
ANALYSIS
After serving as a depth quarterback for Alabama during his first three seasons in Tuscaloosa, Simpson stepped into a full-time starting role as a redshirt junior in 2025. He established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC, finishing the season with a 64.5 percent completion rate while throwing for 3,567 yards and a 28:5 TD:INT. Indiana's Fernando Mendoza profiles as the clear top quarterback in the draft class, but Simpson could emerge as the No. 2 option in the position group and may have a shot at coming off the board in the middle to back end of the first round.

Next QB in Pittsburgh?
Dane Brugler of The Athletic projected that the Steelers will select Simpson with the 21st pick of the 2026 NFL Draft in his mock draft published Jan. 15.
ANALYSIS
Simpson's early declaration for the 2026 draft was something of a surprise, given that he only started 15 games for Alabama during his collegiate career. Nevertheless, the lack of other elite prospects at quarterback is likely to push Simpson up the board and potentially keep him in the first round. Meanwhile, the Steelers could be entering a rebuild given coach Mike Tomlin's departure, with Aaron Rodgers likely to follow.
