After posting six tallies and 23 assists in 78 games during the 2023-24 campaign, Protas broke out in a big way in 2024-25, compiling 30 goals and 66 points in 76 regular-season appearances. The 24-year-old forward was successful in Washington’s top-six forward group, meshing with Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, Dylan Strome and Pierre-Luc Dubois. Protas led the Capitals with 60 even-strength points while ranking third on the team in points per game (0.87) and tying for first on the club with five shorthanded points. He didn’t log much ice time in power-play situations, and his 21.1 shooting percentage is slightly concerning, but he should remain in the 65-point range in 2025-26 if he maintains a spot on one of the top two lines. He also took a hack around the ankle later in the contest, but he was able to finish it despite the physical toll limiting him to 14:55 of ice time. Protas has four goals and five assists during a five-game point streak, and he's up to 16 goals, 31 points, 89 shots on net and a plus-21 rating over 41 appearances at the halfway mark of the Capitals' season.

Protas had a modest breakout in 2023-24, earning 29 points and 113 shots on net over 78 regular-season contests. He's steadily gained more responsibility with the Capitals over the last three years, but Protas' ceiling remains limited by a lack of power-play time -- he averaged just 15 seconds per game with the man advantage last year. Protas is likely to remain in a middle-six role in 2024-25, so it's fair to question how much more growth he can show without a significantly larger role. Expect roughly 30 points without much additional production in the non-scoring categories, leaving his fantasy value to deep formats.
