2025 Fantasy Outlook
A steady contributor from the back end throughout his illustrious 21-year career, Burns’ output took a dive last season, as he was limited to six goals, 29 points, 175 shots on goal and a plus-7 rating over 82 regular-season outings with Carolina. Considering he’s 40 years old, it’s extremely commendable that Burns hasn’t missed a game since 2013-14. That durability keeps him in the conversation as a depth option for fantasy managers this campaign, especially since he’ll be playing for a high-flying Avalanche squad that ranked sixth in the NHL with 3.33 goals per game in 2024-25. The hulking defenseman will challenge Josh Manson for a spot on the second pairing in training camp, and provided that Colorado continues to rack up goals in 2025-26, Burns could return to the 40-point mark -- he's only two years removed from recording 43 points in his age-38 season. ANALYSIS
Per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, it's a $1 million contract with up to $3 million in bonuses for games-played thresholds. Burns will join a contending team for his age-40 season. With Cale Makar firmly entrenched on the top power-play unit, Burns will likely see time on the second unit and may see reduced ice time in all situations. Burns was limited to 29 points in 82 regular-season contests last year and has declined significantly in each of the last two seasons, but he's still averaged over 20 minutes of ice time per game, so he's far from running on empty even this late in his career. He has played in 925 consecutive games and would become the second player in league history to play in 1,000 games without an absence if he stays healthy for the vast majority of 2025-26.

Normally, it's hard to knock a defenseman for putting up 43 points in a season, but when you are talking about Burns, who has reached the 50-point threshold in every previous full-length season since 2014-15, it's hard not to be at least a little disappointed in his 2023-24 production. It certainly wasn't for a lack of power-play opportunities, as the 39-year-old defenseman still averaged 2:38 of ice time with the man advantage and notched 20 power-play points. Whether he can rediscover his even-strength scoring touch will be a big question for Burns heading into the 2024-25 campaign. At this stage of his career, the 70-80 point seasons are probably long gone, but a bounce-back year in which he notches 50-plus certainly isn't out of the question.

Not expected back with Canes
Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky is not expected to bring Burns back for 2025-26, Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer reports.
ANALYSIS
Burns is an unrestricted free agent this summer after completing his eight-year, $64 million contract. The 40-year-old is coming off a solid campaign, scoring six goals and 23 assists in 82 regular-season outings. He has now played four straight 82-game campaigns, so even at 40 years old, he is as durable as they come. However, if he wants to continue his NHL career, he'll likely have to do it with another team.
