Wagner signed a two-year, minor-league contract with AHL Springfield on Tuesday, Freelance reporter Irfaan Gaffar reports.
ANALYSIS
Wagner has reached the point in his career where he serves as a veteran leader at the minor league level. Still, the center is an 11-year NHL veteran, having played in 401 games while tallying 39 goals and 27 assists. If he puts up good numbers in the minors, perhaps the Blues will sign him to an NHL deal down the road.

Wagner split the 2023-24 regular season between the NHL and AHL, recording eight goals and 14 points in 21 outings with the minor-league Eagles as well as a goal, two points, nine PIM and 30 hits in 13 contests with the Avalanche. The 33-year-old will enter the season with a shot of making the Avalanche as a member of their fourth line. He would be a solid source of PIM and hits if he plays regularly, but there's no guarantee Wagner will be able to hold onto a roster spot even if he starts the year in the NHL.
Wagner was a regular in the lineup for the Bruins last season, picking up 10 points while racking up 192 hits in 67 contests. The 29-year-old American will continue to produce meager offensive totals while skating in a bottom-six role in 2020-21, but he should average around three hits per game, giving him a little appeal in rotisserie leagues that count that category.
Wagner, who remains under contract with the Bruins through the upcoming season, ended up being a surprisingly solid addition to the team last year, chipping in 12 goals and 19 points in 76 regular-season games while mostly working on the team's fourth line. While the 6-foot, 198-pounder is off the radar in most fantasy formats, the gritty 28-year-old does at least help out in leagues where his hits (147) factor in.
The 27-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Bruins in July after recording a career-high seven goals and 16 points in 79 games between the Ducks and Islanders last season. With any luck, moving from the worst defensive team to a contender could result in a complete reversal of his minus-10 rating. He doesn't supply as many penalty minutes as most fantasy owners would like from a fourth-liner (37 last season), but his 253 hits were the third-most in the league last season. His physicality attracted the Bruins and it should appeal to select virtual-league owners as well.
Wagner was down in the minors with AHL San Diego for 30 games last season, which doesn't bode well for his career trajectory and chances to make a fantasy impact in 2017-18. A depth option down the middle, the 26-year-old has managed only 13 points in 95 career contests at hockey's highest level.

Could play in Game 1?
RWColorado Avalanche  Minors
May 7, 2024
Wagner was spotted leaving morning skate early, suggesting he could draw into the lineup for Game 1 against Dallas on Tuesday, per Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now.
ANALYSIS
Wagner played in 13 games with the Avalanche during the regular season, logging one goal and one assist from a bottom-six role. The 32-year-old also played in 21 games at the AHL level during the regular season, recording eight goals and six assists. If he draws into the lineup, Wagner will likely be on the third or fourth line for Game 1 versus the Stars.
