Thrun was traded to the Maple Leafs from the Sharks on Thursday in exchange for Ryan Reaves.
ANALYSIS
This is a bit of an odd trade on the surface for the Sharks, and one that may not benefit Thrun on an individual level. San Jose's offseason acquisitions of John Klingberg, Nick Leddy and Dmitry Orlov brought a more veteran group of defenders into the mix, which may have left Thrun without a regular role in 2025-26. That said, he's no lock to play with his new team, and he almost certainly won't be in the power-play mix immediately with Toronto. Thrun had 12 points in 60 appearances in 2024-25, and if he can't win a job in training camp, he may have to spend part of the year with AHL Toronto.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Thrun took on an enhanced role for the Sharks late in the season, appearing in each of the club's final 28 games. Overall, he appeared in 51 contests, managing three goals and 11 points while averaging exactly 20 minutes of ice time per game. Still just 23 years old and signed to a new two-year, $2 million contract, the former Harvard standout would appear to be locked in to a bottom-four role for San Jose in 2024-25, but his fantasy value will likely be dependent on how much power-play time he can earn.
Originally a fourth-round pick of Anaheim in 2019, Thrun made it clear he wouldn't be signing with the Ducks, so instead of losing his rights for nothing, they traded him to the rival Sharks in late February. Thrun signed his entry-level deal about a month later and made his NHL debut three weeks after that, finishing with a pair of assists in his first eight games in the league. Thrun was close to a point-per-game guy (84 points in 99 games) in three seasons at Harvard, but he's going to make his living as a steady, middle-pairing rearguard at the NHL level. He should be a regular for San Jose in 2023-24.
