Jani Hakanpaa

Hakanpaa again took a step forward in 2022-23, posting 16 points, a plus-18 rating, 224 hits and 128 blocked shots in 82 contests. The Finn has brought some thump in a bottom-four role for the Stars over the last two years, and it's that physical play that gives him fantasy appeal in deeper formats. He's never likely to challenge for the 20-point mark and he doesn't get power-play time, so there's no reason to expect him to grow on offense in 2023-24. He'll also be coming off of knee surgery after sustaining an injury during the Stars' run to the Western Conference Finals, so it's possible he could miss time at the start of the campaign.

After a four-year run with Karpat of the Finnish Liiga, Hakanpaa returned to North America in 2019-20. He posted 13 points in 47 games with AHL San Diego and added one goal in five outings with the Ducks. It's been a long road to the NHL for the 28-year-old Finn, but he's set to feature in a third-pairing role in 2020-21. The Ducks' offense isn't expected to be very good, and Hakanpaa isn't known for offense either, so it's unlikely he reaches double-digit points in the 56-game campaign.

The 22-year-old Hakanpaa made his debut at AHL Chicago last season, providing four goals and four assists over 54 games. He’s never shown much aptitude as a scorer while playing professionally in Finland and the minors, likely relegating him third-pairing duties once he reaches the NHL.
