Luke Hughes

Luke Hughes

22-Year-Old DefensemanD
New Jersey Devils
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Hughes has surpassed the 40-point mark in two straight seasons. Despite earning fewer goals and assists in his sophomore campaign, the 21-year-old blueliner improved his point-per-game production in the 2024-25 regular season. Hughes had only two assists in his first 13 appearances, but he compiled three goals and 23 points in his final 24 games. He sustained a shoulder injury in New Jersey’s playoff opener versus Carolina in Round 1 and underwent surgery in May. However, he should be ready for the start of the 2025-26 campaign. He probably won’t supplant Dougie Hamilton as the team’s power-play quarterback, which hurts his fantasy value, but Hughes still could register around 40-50 points while topping 100 shots and 60 blocks.  Read Past Outlooks
Signed a seven-year, $63 million contract with the Devils in October of 2025.
Secures seven-year deal
DNew Jersey Devils
October 1, 2025
Hughes agreed to terms on a seven-year, $63 million contract with New Jersey on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Hughes and the Devils were finally able to resolve the contract dispute that kept the defenseman out for the entirety of the preseason. It's possible the 22-year-old New Hampshire native will still see action against the Flyers on Saturday in the preseason finale. Hughes has reached the 40-point threshold in each of his first two full NHL seasons and shows no sign of slowing down heading into 2025-26.

2024
2023
The youngest of the three Hughes brothers took part in his first full NHL campaign in 2023-24 and made his mark, scoring nine goals and 47 points across 82 contests en route to a Calder Trophy nomination. However, Hughes' defense needs work, and while plus/minus is an imperfect stat, his minus-25 rating last year -- the third worst among New Jersey players -- reflects those struggles. The Devils tolerated those defensive issues last campaign, but if they persist, it might diminish Hughes' ice time. His value was also heavily tied to the power play, which accounted for 25 of his points, but a healthy Dougie Hamilton could limit Hughes' role with the man advantage. Additionally, Hughes will now miss the first month of the season due to a shoulder injury suffered before training camp opened. Those issues aren't enough to alter the fact that he has the potential to be an elite contributor on offense, but it does make him a higher-risk selection going into drafts for the 2024-25 campaign.
There's a case to be made Hughes was the top prospect in the NHL a season ago. He averaged well over a point-per-game in his sophomore season at the University of Michigan (10 goals, 48 points in 39 games) before turning pro. He got into two games late in the year before being a healthy scratch for the club's first nine postseason games. Hughes got back in the lineup for the club's final three playoff games, but New Jersey was already living on borrowed time. Luke is quite a bit bigger than either of his star brothers, but he possesses the family trademark speed and elusiveness. It's fair to wonder how much the Devils want to put on his plate in his first full NHL season considering he will be playing the entire year at age 20, but Hughes is already one of the best defenders on the Jersey roster.

Finalizing long-term deal
DNew Jersey Devils
October 1, 2025
Hughes and the Devils are closing in on a seven-year, $63 million contract extension, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Hughes has missed all of training camp thus far due to his contract dispute with the club, but it appears the two sides have come to an arrangement. At this point, it seems unlikely the 22-year-old blueliner will be ready in time to face the Rangers on Thursday, but he could still be an option for the preseason finale versus the Flyers on Saturday.
