Antonelli was off the pace of Mercedes teammate George Russell but still had the chance for points in the grand prix. The team employed an aggressive strategy of switching to slick tires in wet conditions, hurting both Russell and Antonelli. As a result, Antonelli found himself at the lower end of the field and was rear-ended by Isack Hadjar due to limited visibility on the track, damaging his diffuser and ultimately forcing his retirement.
