2025 Fantasy Outlook
Falter got his most extended opportunity as a starter in 2024 by taking 28 turns through the rotation as a member of the Pirates. His 4.43 ERA and 1.29 WHIP were both unremarkable, and those results were backed by similarly uninspiring skills. His strikeout rate dipped to 16.5 percent, and his career 9.2 percent swinging strike rate doesn't suggest there's much additional upside. The positive from his profile was his ability to blend a relatively high 42.1 percent flyball rate with a more muted 1.1 HR/9. That could offer a streaming opportunity in favorable pitcher's parks or power-deficient lineups, so long as Falter can stick in the rotation. The latter point is hardly a given with Johan Oviedo (elbow) likely to be back in the mix, as well as promising prospects such as Thomas Harrington, Braxton Ashcraft (forearm) and Bubba Chandler all likely to reach the majors at some point in 2025. All told, Falter should be on the radar for NL-only leagues, but his appeal in mixed formats should be a streamer at most. Read Past Outlooks

Ties career high with eight Ks
Falter (7-5) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings in a 6-1 victory over the Tigers. He struck out eight without walking a batter.
Analysis
The southpaw delivered his first quality start since May 31 on an efficient 87 pitches (63 strikes) as he tied his career high in strikeouts. Falter has struggled since the beginning of June, and even after Wednesday's performance he carries a 4.89 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB over his last nine starts and 42.1 innings. He'll look to build on this effort in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week in San Francisco.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Falter was flipped from Philadelphia at the trade deadline in 2023, though his role, workload and skill all remained nearly identical before and after the trade. He threw a total of 80.2 uninspiring innings in the majors, as he saw his velocity dip to the lowest mark of his career (90.9), with a corresponding dip in swinging strike rate (7.9 percent) and strikeout rate (17.3 percent). Even on a team with a relatively uninspiring group of starters, it's unlikely that Falter will be able to earn anything more than spot starts and a bullpen role. Though he's not a closer of the future, Falter has had more success in relief in his career, holding opponents to a .303 wOBA with 52 strikeouts across 56.2 innings. He could turn into a relatively successful multi-inning reliever, though the fantasy value of that in most league formats is minimal.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Makes Pirates history
Falter's 0.76 ERA across six starts in June is the lowest mark by a Pirates pitcher that made at least six starts in a month since 1920.
Analysis
The left-hander's fantasy upside continues to be limited due to his low strikeout numbers, but he was dominant in May with just three earned runs allowed and a 19:13 K:BB across 35.2 innings. Falter was a decent rotation piece for Pittsburgh last year with a 4.43 ERA in 28 starts, but he's looking like a borderline All-Star early in 2025 with a 3.14 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 66 innings.
