2025 Fantasy Outlook
Rodriguez signed a four-year deal with Arizona during the offseason but suffered a strained lat in spring training and eventually landed on the 60-day injured list. He debuted Aug. 7 and pitched to a 5.04 ERA, (5.59 xERA) over 10 starts, the second time in three seasons with fewer than 20 starts. He averaged just five innings per start at a time when the Diamondbacks pushed for the postseason. The 31-year-old was barreled up (10.8 percent, sixth percentile), leading to a career-worst 42.0 hard-hit percentage; Rodriguez lived in the bottom half of the percentile bucket in most categories. With six viable starters, there's rumored interest in Arizona's surplus, but the D-backs are likely stuck with Rodriguez's contract until 2027, which has a vesting option for 2028. They would be happy with the extra year if Rodriguez meets performance incentives and contributes to playoff success. Read Past Outlooks

Leaves after comebacker
Rodriguez was removed from Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Astros with one out in the seventh inning after a comebacker hit him on the inside of his leg, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.
Analysis
Rodriguez waved off manager Torey Lovullo and the team's athletic trainer, but Lovullo pulled him from the game. "He was okay. Probably could have gone a little bit extra, but I felt like he had done his job at that point," Lovullo said. Rodriguez was at the 90-pitch mark and probably wouldn't have come out for the eighth. The left-hander is expected to take his next turn in the rotation Monday against the Tigers.

Rodriguez delivered career bests in ERA (3.30) and WHIP (1.15) to go along with a 143:48 K:BB over 152 innings during 2023, so it was hardly a surprise he opted out of the remaining three years and $49 million of his contract with the Tigers. It was a surprise, however, when the left-hander utilized his no-trade clause to prevent a deal to the contending Dodgers. He certainly pitched well but may have had some fortunate results with a 4.04 xERA, 4.06 xFIP and career-worst 37.0 percent hard-hit rate. Rodriguez also missed five weeks with a finger injury and ended up making 43 starts in his two years with Detroit. His 203.1 frames in 2019 is the only time he's topped 160 innings during his eight MLB seasons, so a heavy workload shouldn't be the expectation heading into his age-31 campaign. He secured a four-year, $80 million deal with the Diamondbacks, which means a less advantageous home park than in Detroit but a more helpful defense behind him.

Analysis
Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day IL on May 16 due to left shoulder inflammation. The injury may have played a factor in his poor start to the season, as he posted a 1-3 record over nine starts with a 7.05 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 52:18 K:BB across 44.2 innings. Per MLB.com, the 32-year-old southpaw felt good after his 55-pitch simulated game Saturday and could forego a rehab assignment. Rodriguez is eligible to be reinstated off the IL on May 31.
