2025 Fantasy Outlook
Plans for deGrom to return from Tommy John surgery in early August failed to manifest, but he logged three abbreviated starts in late September. Pitching with six days rest for each, deGrom surrendered only two earned runs in 10.2 innings, punching out 14 while issuing just one free pass. He averaged 97.3-mph on this four-seam fastball, with a max of 99.4-mph. Fear of missing out enters the chat. Including rehab, deGrom recorded 21.1 frames last season, with only 107.1 combined innings over the prior two years. This was his second Tommy John procedure, and deGrom has experienced shoulder issues as well. There is no right or wrong; rostering deGrom is a matter of risk tolerance, and being prepared in case he misses more time, though even if healthy, the veteran's workload will be tempered. Gets no help in loss
DeGrom (0-1) allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven innings, taking the loss versus the Dodgers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
This is the definition of a hard-luck loss -- deGrom gave up a solo home run to Tommy Edman on the second pitch of the game, and that was the difference. DeGrom threw 61 of 96 pitches for strikes in this strong start, so his workload limitations look to be just about gone after his fourth outing. This was deGrom's first quality start of the season, and it was a strong bounce-back effort after he allowed three runs, including two home runs, on three hits and four walks over four innings against the Mariners last Friday. For the season, the right-hander has a 3.32 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB across 21.2 innings, though he's also given up five homers.

Todd Zola is back with his weekly pitcher rankings. And while there aren't many decent starters on multiple appearances, a couple stand out from the rest.

With a number of starters already logging three turns through the rotation, Todd Zola is here to give his thoughts in addition to the latest pitcher placements.

Saturday’s key FanDuel picks include a healthy Jacob deGrom, who looked great for five innings in his first start of 2025.

DeGrom's first season with the Rangers after inking a five-year, $185 million contract ended after just six starts when he required Tommy John surgery in mid-June. Unsurprisingly, he was brilliant when on the mound, boasting an absurd 45:4 K:BB over 30.1 innings while averaging 98.7 mph with his fastball. The hope is that the two-time Cy Young winner can rejoin the Rangers' rotation at some point after the All-Star break, but given that it was his second UCL repair and the fact that he has made just 44 starts over the last four seasons, the rehab could take a little longer than your normal Tommy John surgery. He's been indisputably the best pitcher in the game when healthy, but unless you have unlimited IL spots it's difficult to advocate taking deGrom in a redraft in 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Will remain sidelined
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy believes deGrom could be "two to three weeks away" from returning to action, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The recent update also indicates deGrom will meet with team physicians next Monday to determine whether he can start to ramp up the intensity in his throwing program. The two-time Cy Young winner has struggled with injuries this season and was placed on the injured list on April 29 with inflammation in his throwing elbow, so the Rangers will be cautious with the recovery process. Through his first six starts with the Rangers, deGrom owns a 2.67 ERA across 30.1 innings.
