Morii will be developed as a two-way player after inking a contract with the Athletics in January that includes a $1.51 million signing bonus, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Morii turned some heads Friday in the Athletics' Spring Breakout game, serving as a designated hitter in that contest and hitting a ball that had an exit velocity of 110.1 miles per hour. The 18-year-old from Japan bypassed entry into the draft for Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball to begin his career in MLB. Though he's considered to be more advanced as a hitter, Morii sports a fastball that has been clocked at 95 mph. He's expected to begin the season in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.
