2025 Fantasy Outlook
Young improved somewhat in his second year, though it took an early season benching before he turned things around. He got back into the starting lineup Week 8 only because Andy Dalton was hurt but played well enough to hold onto the job. In the final three games, Young threw seven TD passes and no interceptions, with three rushing scores. In that span, he had more TD passes of 20-plus yards (three) than he did in his other 11 games (two). Young's accuracy, though, didn't really improve on the whole, and his on-target percentage for the season was 67.2 -- only Anthony Richardson's was lower -- while his completion percentage was 60.9 (33rd), a scant percentage point better than in his rookie season. The Panthers hope to build on the late-season success, of course, and drafted WR Tetairoa McMillan eighth overall to help Young. He needs more help. The 6-foot-4, 219-pound McMillan has good speed for his size and should immediately become the No. 1 receiver, but otherwise the Panthers' WR room is quite bare. Adam Thielen, 35, looks like the No. 2 option, after undrafted Jalen Coker outplayed 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette during their rookie season. The Panthers at least have a respectable offensive line, but their overall roster remains among the worst in the league, making it an uphill battle for Young to even sniff QB1 fantasy status. Fifth-year option getting picked up
General manager Dan Morgan announced Tuesday that Carolina plans to exercise the 2027 team option on Young's contract this offseason, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Young's fifth-year option is projected to come in at around $26.5 million and will be fully guaranteed. While the Panthers' willingness to pick up the option represents some level of commitment to the 24-year-old signal-caller heading into his fourth NFL season, Young may need to make more dramatic strides in 2026 in order to land a long-term extension with Carolina. Young showed some modest improvement in Year 3, leading an 8-9 Panthers squad to its first NFC South title in a decade while directing six game-winning drives and completing 304 of 478 pass attempts for 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions to go with 216 yards and two scores on 54 games over 16 starts during the regular season. Though his 63.6 percent completion rate was a career-best mark, his 6.3 yards per attempt matched his average from his 2024 season. Young might have instilled some additional confidence in his prospects heading into 2026 with a respectable showing against the heavily favored Rams in the wild-card round this past weekend, when he led two fourth-quarter touchdown drives and accounted for 288 yards (264 passing, 24 rushing) in a 34-31 loss.

The No. 1 pick in last year’s draft, Young had a rough welcome to the NFL. He finished at or near the bottom of nearly every passing category last season, including in yards per attempt where his 5.5 mark was the lowest in the league in a decade. Young was not just inaccurate, but he rarely attempted to stretch the field. Only 7.2 percent of his throws went longer than 20 yards, 29th in the league. When he did go deep, he struggled -- only Mac Jones had a lower completion percentage on downfield passes than Young’s 22.8 percent. Young lacks a signature trait -- he doesn’t have a big arm, doesn’t run much (four designed runs for zero yards) and he’s just 5-10 — but the Panthers didn't exactly help matters last season. They failed to surround him with talent, and the scheme was so futile it cost head coach Frank Reich his job after Week 12. Former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales was hired to do for Young what he did for Baker Mayfield last year. Canales plans to use play-action and bootlegs to keep Young upright after 62 sacks last year, in addition to getting the ball out more quickly. The Panthers traded for WR Diontae Johnson, drafted WR Xavier Legette at No. 32 overall and signed a pair of starting guards, ensuring Young will have at least a little more help than he did last year.

Backs into playoff home game
Young and the Panthers will host the Rams in the wild-card round, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Panthers had a chance to clinch a playoff berth Saturday but lost to the Buccaneers. Carolina made the playoffs anyway thanks to the Falcons' win over the Saints on Sunday, which created a three-way tie atop the NFC South, which the Panthers won thanks to a tiebreaker. The Panthers finished 8-9 but will have a home game in the wild-card round by virtue of winning their division. The Rams went 12-5 in the regular season, but one of those five losses came against Young and the Panthers. Young will be making his playoff debut.
