Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Kancey took an encouraging step forward in his 2024 NFL sophomore campaign, posting a career-high 28 tackles, including 7.5 sacks, across just 12 regular-season games. The 2023 first-round pick hasn't yet played a full season over his first two years in the league, but his upside when on the field has been evident. Kancey has logged over 500 defensive snaps in each of his first pair of campaigns, and he should be in for a similar or larger workload this season, particularly if he's able to enjoy better health. Set to miss rest of season
Kancey will undergo season-ending surgery Friday after an MRI confirmed that he sustained a torn pectoral muscle in Monday's 20-19 win over the Texans, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Kancey was forced out during the first half of Monday's game, and follow-up imaging Tuesday confirmed the Buccaneers' worst fears. The loss of the 24-year-old for the remainder of the season represents a major hit to the Tampa Bay pass rush, after Kancey accrued 11.5 sacks in 28 games through his first two-plus seasons since entering the league as a first-round selection in 2023. Elijah Roberts and Greg Gaines could both see expanded roles on the defensive line alongside starters Vita Vea and Logan Hall for the duration of the season.

How do Calijah Kancey's measurables compare to other defensive tackles?

The Buccaneers' rookie first-round pick is drawing comparisons to Aaron Donald, but the even more Tampa-centric one of Gerald McCoy may be very appropriate as well. The Pittsburgh product is listed at 281 pounds - particularly light for a defensive tackle - but he ran a 4.67 40-yard dash at the combine and compiled 91 tackles and 16 sacks over his three college seasons. Kancey should have a chance to play a significant role in the defensive line rotation right from the start of his pro career.

Olympic option for Team USA?
Nick Shook of NFL.com believes Kancey would be a strong candidate to play for Team USA if the NFL passes a resolution that allows NFL players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Summer Olympics.
ANALYSIS
Kancey isn't an NFL superstar, but his skill set could work well in a flag football setting. The Buccaneers defensive tackle ran the fastest 40-yard dash at his position since 2003 at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, and Kancey has posted 11.5 sacks over his first two NFL campaigns. With no offensive or defensive lines in flag football, Kancey's speed could help him be a contributor if the NFL owners vote to allow NFL players to partake in the Olympics in Los Angeles.
