Agrees to restructure
Johnson and the Saints agreed to terms on a contract restructure Friday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's restructure converts part of his base salary into a signing bonus, freeing up $6.29 million in cap space for the team. The veteran tight end enjoyed a career year in head coach Kellen Moore's offense in 2025 and flashed reliable rapport with quarterback Tyler Shough, totaling a career-best 77-889-3 receiving line (103 targets) while suiting up for all 17 regular-season games. Looking ahead to the 2026 campaign, Johnson projects as a high-floor fantasy option and fair candidate to outperform his ADP.

Johnson is back with the Saints on a three-year, $30.75 million contract after setting career highs in targets (66), catches (50) and receiving yards (548) last season. The converted wide receiver scored only three touchdowns after recording 11 over his first two years as a tight end, but the lack of TDs can be chalked up in large part to the Saints’ struggles on offense as a whole. Johnson was limited to just six red-zone targets as the Saints scored 19.9 points per game (tied for eighth fewest). Starting QB Derek Carr missed seven games, and with Carr now retiring, Johnson likely will be held back by poor QB play again. At least Johnson is well positioned for steady playing time, as fellow Saints tight ends Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau are uncertain to be ready for Week 1 after having major knee surgeries late last season.

Underrated member of FA class
Johnson is labeled by Bucky Brooks of NFL.com as a pending free agent who might be underrated.
ANALYSIS
Brooks notes Johnson, who once played wide receiver, has put together an impressive resume over the last three seasons in particular. Johnson has posted a 129-1,424-14 receiving line across 46 regular-season games in that span, and while Brooks concedes Johnson's blocking skills need improvement, he adds the fifth-year pro could thrive in a creative scheme that utilizes him in a "Joker" role.
