Sam LaPorta

24-Year-Old Tight EndTE
Detroit Lions
2025 Fantasy Outlook
LaPorta took a step back after his outstanding rookie season, dipping from 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023 (on 120 targets) to 60 catches for 726 yards and seven TDs in 2024 (83 targets). There’s plenty of success to go around on a Lions offense that led the NFL with 33.2 points per game last season, but RBs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery tend to eat first, and Amon-Ra St. Brown is still the top pass catcher. That makes it tough to project big-time volume for LaPorta or Jameson Williams, who broke out in 2024 with his first 1,000-yard season while getting only eight more targets than LaPorta. The tight end did improve later in the season after a slow start, scoring double-digit PPR points in his final seven games (including playoffs) and recording six or more targets in each of his last nine. LaPorta’s 17 TDs since he came into the league are tied for the most among TEs over that span, and his 20 red-zone targets in 2024 were fifth most at the position, so he should keep scoring plenty of TDs under new offensive coordinator John Morton. The question is whether LaPorta can also match his target volume from 2023 and the latter part of 2024, rather than slumping to a lesser role like he did for the first half of last season (3.6 targets per game). LaPorta recorded six receptions on nine targets for 79 yards in Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
LaPorta was the bright spot in an otherwise underwhelming offensive performance from Detroit, as he led the team in yards and finished second in targets. He also accounted for the team's longest play from scrimmage on a 32-yard catch and run to begin the second half. LaPorta isn't likely to consistently see nine targets as he shares looks with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, but he will be a key part of Detroit's offense -- particularly in the red zone.

2023
Young tight ends often take a year or two to find their footing in the NFL, but LaPorta bucked that trend last season with 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns on 120 targets. While he couldn’t quite catch up to Mike Ditka’s rookie-TE records of 1,076 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, LaPorta’s 86 receptions became the new standard. No other tight end scored more than six touchdowns last year, and the second-round pick out of Iowa also ranked top five at his position for catches, targets and yards. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown is likely to lead the Lions in receiving volume again in 2024, but the 44-target gap between St. Brown and LaPorta last year was smaller than the 49-target gap between LaPorta and Jared Goff's third-favorite target, RB Jahmyr Gibbs. Being the clear second option in a top-notch offense should work out just fine, even leaving the 23-year-old tight end some room for volume growth relative to last year. While he's unlikely to outscore all other TEs by four TDs again, the ingredients are there for LaPorta to follow up his superb rookie season with another strong campaign.
The Lions surprisingly made LaPorta the second tight end off the board in the 2023 NFL Draft, selecting him 34th overall despite a few more highly touted prospects at the position being available. LaPorta will look to follow in the footsteps of fellow Iowa alumni George Kittle, T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant, all of whom developed into fantasy-relevant tight ends. He should get plenty of playing time as a rookie on a team with no other TEs drafted before Round 5, but LaPorta’s college production pales in comparison to that of the aforementioned players out of Iowa. Each of those guys scored at least nine touchdowns over their last two college seasons, while the 6-foot-4 LaPorta found the end zone only five times total in four seasons. Even if he plays a lot, he'll likely take a back seat to Detroit’s other playmakers on offense, namely WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and RBs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

Ranked No. 3 TE despite down year
TEDetroit Lions
July 12, 2025
LaPorta was ranked the league's third-best tight end based on votes from a combination of NFL executives, scouts and coaches, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.
ANALYSIS
LaPorta moved up a spot from fourth in last year's rankings to third this year, as executives, scouts and coaches didn't put as much stock into his reduced production in 2024 compared to LaPorta's fellow players, who knocked him down 14 spots in their rankings of the league's top 100 players. LaPorta's well-rounded skill set goes beyond his production as a pass catcher, as he's also one of the league's best blockers among tight ends.
