Sauce Gardner

24-Year-Old CornerbackCB
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gardner's 2024 totals in passes defensed (nine) and tackles (49) were both career lows, down from his averages of 15.5 passes defensed and 66 tackles from 2022 and 2023, when he became the first cornerback in NFL history to be named first-team All-Pro in his first two seasons. His coverage skills are second to none, but the two biggest knocks on Gardner are a lack of interceptions and pedestrian tackling. Even if he regains his All-Pro form under former Jets CB Aaron Glenn, a lack of passes Gardner's way from opposing QBs likely won't give him many chances to add to his career total of three interceptions. The Jets and Gardner agreed to terms on a four-year, $120.4 million contract extension Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
In back-to-back days, the Jets have locked in two of their first-round picks from the 2022 Draft after Garrett Wilson agreed to a four-year extension Monday. This deal for Gardner includes $85.653 million guaranteed, per Adam Schefter of ESPN, and also makes him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL in terms of average annual value. Through his first three pro seasons, Gardner has been a first-team All-Pro two times, though he does have only three interceptions among 41 pass defenses in 48 regular-season appearances. He'll continue to serve as a shut-down corner in New York's defense.

2022
Gardner has already established himself as arguably the best cornerback in the NFL, posting consecutive first team All-Pro seasons in his first two campaigns after being drafted fourth overall by the Jets in 2022. The Jets secondary is likely to remain elite with Gardner leading the way, but unfortunately for fantasy purposes, quarterbacks know Sauce's elite reputation and rarely test him. Gardner has only two career interceptions and dipped to 11 passes defensed in 2023 after leading the league with 20 as a rookie.
Gardner took home Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2022, as the fourth overall pick out of Cincinnati led the league with 20 passes defensed while adding 75 tackles (51 solo) and two interceptions. He will likely be a better player on the field than in fantasy in 2023, as opposing quarterbacks will be loath to throw in Sauce's direction after his standout rookie campaign. Gardner and fellow cornerback D.J. Reed figure to make life difficult on wide receivers again after the Jets allowed a league-low 1,857 yards to the position in 2022.
Gardner was drafted fourth overall by the Jets after going his entire college career in Cincinnati without allowing a touchdown. The rookie cornerback will try to follow in Darrelle Revis' footsteps, and Gardner will face a steep learning curve playing in the same division as star wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Tyreek Hill.

CBNew York Jets
July 16, 2025
Gardner and the Jets agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension Tuesday that makes him the league's highest-paid cornerback based on average annual salary, Adam Schefter and Rich Cimini of ESPN.com report.
ANALYSIS
Schefter notes Gardner's contract includes $86.653 million guaranteed, and the overall contract allows the 2022 fourth overall pick to surpass the Texans' Derek Stingley in contract average annual value. Gardner joined teammate Garrett Wilson in receiving his extension in the first year he was eligible for one, making the duo the first to do so under the NFL's current financial system, which went into effect in 2011.
