Makes two grabs in Chiefs debut
WRKansas City Chiefs
September 6, 2025
Thornton secured two of four targets for 41 yards during the Chiefs' 27-21 loss to the Chargers on Friday night.
ANALYSIS
Thornton recorded the second-highest yardage total of his NFL career in his first regular-season appearance with Kansas City, playing 72 percent of offensive snaps and operating as a starter in three-wide sets alongside Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster. With Rashee Rice (suspension) unavailable for the first six games of the year, Thornton had already been facing increased opportunities, but it was Xavier Worthy (shoulder) being forced out after just three offensive snaps that bumped Thornton into a starting role in three-wide sets. If Worthy and Jalen Royals (knee) aren't ready to return Week 2 against the Eagles, Thornton will be primed for a similar opportunity.

2022
Over the first two years of his pro career, Thornton, a 2022 second-rounder, has had trouble staying on the field and been limited to 35 catches in 22 contests. With an eye toward holding up better, the 6-2, 185-pounder sought to bulk up ahead of this season. Thornton's speed remains his calling card, and that's what could help him stick around if he has a strong summer under the tutelage of new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. On the plus side, Thornton, 24, figures to have a clean slate with the team's new coaching staff, but the Baylor product has plenty of competition for targets in a crowded wideout corps that lacks a clear pecking order ahead of training camp.
The Patriots traded up for Thornton in the second round of the 2022 Draft, but he was largely a complementary piece in New England's receiving corps as a rookie, with Jakobi Meyers, DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor also in the mix. Now that Meyers (Las Vegas) and Agholor (Baltimore) are elsewhere, Thornton should improve on last year's numbers - 22-247-2 line on 45 targets in 13 games - given the likelihood that he'll see increased volume alongside the two key holdovers and newcomer JuJu Smith-Schuster. Thornton has a slight frame at 6-2, 182 pounds, but he recorded a 4.28-second 40-yard dash during last year's combine, and with wheels like that, he has a chance to make his mark as a deep threat in 2023.
New England moved up in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft to take Thornton 50th overall. Though some thought that may have been a reach, there's no question the Patriots landed one of the fastest players in his draft class. Thornton, whom the Patriots list at 6-2, 182 pounds, logged an official 4.28-second 40-yard dash, and on top of that he was a convincingly productive player in college. He reportedly did solid work at his first training camp, but then suffered a collarbone injury in the preseason and is now expected to miss at least the first month and a half of the regular season. Once he's ready, Thornton could work as an occasional deep threat off the bench, or perhaps be more than that if the Patriots' veteran wideouts are injured/ineffective.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Bigger role sans Worthy?
WRKansas City Chiefs
September 6, 2025
Thornton would have a bigger role in the Chiefs' offense if Xavier Worthy were to miss extended time due to a shoulder injury that he suffered during Friday's 27-21 loss to the Chargers, Braden Holecek of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornton wasn't expected to see much action in Friday's regular-season opener, even with rookie fourth-rounder Jalen Royals sidelined due to knee tendinitis. However, Worthy was injured on the Chiefs' first drive of the game, which thrust Thornton into regular action on three-wideout sets alongside Hollywood Brown and Juju Smith-Schuster. Thornton finished with two catches on four targets for 41 yards, and his 44 offensive snaps were his most since Week 14 of the 2023 season as a member of the Patriots. His performance was highlighted by a 38-yard catch on a deep corner route near the sideline, and that big-play ability would give him a high ceiling in the Chiefs' offense if Worthy is out of action for multiple weeks.
