World Wide Technology Championship Betting Preview

It's a sprint to the finish in the FedExCup Fall as we have tournaments each of the next three weeks leading up until Thanksgiving, beginning with this week's World Wide Technology Championship in Los Cabos, Mexico. The PGA Tour returns to the Tiger Woods designed El Cardonal Golf Course for the third consecutive year and includes six of the top-50 players in the OWGR, highlighted by U.S. Ryder Cup members J.J. Spaun and tournament favorite Ben Griffin at 10-1 odds. Last year, Austin Eckroat (45-1) won by one stroke over Justin Lower and Carson Young for his second Tour victory.

This is one of the events in which the PGA Tour doesn't have ShotLink technology, so we don't have any strokes gained data to draw from. The good thing is that we do have a couple years of seeing the venue, and the par-72, 7,452 yard resort course plays very much like one with it's wide fairways, minimal rough and large greens. With that will come ample scoring opportunities, which we've seen with Eckroat winning at 24-under last year after Erik van Rooyen won the inaugural event at 27-under. With that said, we'll definitely want to look towards birdie makers here more than just about anywhere else. The course setup makes you think there's a big advantage to the long hitters, but we've seen plenty of accurate drivers do well here, so I prefer favoring good iron playing as well as quality putters considering the large greens will bring three-putts into play.

Best on Approach

These five golfers, on a per-round basis, have gained the most strokes on approach across their last 20 rounds:

Kohles is coming off another solid week with the irons, ranking 14th in approach in Utah to post a top-20 finish and his ninth consecutive tournament gaining strokes in the category. Kohles skipped this event last year but doesn't have that luxury this time around at 144th in the FedExCup. He's one of the most accurate drivers in the field and a darkhorse at 110-1 odds. Meanwhile, Eckroat will have fond memories of the venue after closing with the lowest final round to win by one. The 26-year-old has taken a step back in his third season on Tour, as he's yet to record a top-5 finish for the first time in his career. Nevertheless, the oddsmakers are giving the two-time winner plenty of respect at 55-1.

World Wide Technology Championship Bets: Outright Picks

Max Greyserman (20-1)

Greyserman has been inconsistent this year, but he found his form in Utah with his fifth runner-up finish since last summer. That makes him a prime target for an outright wager, and he should be able to keep the momentum going at a place where he fired four rounds in the 60s en route to a solo fourth result.

Johnny Keefer (45-1)

Keefer will look to duplicate Michael Brennan's performance from two weeks ago, going from the lesser Tour to become a PGA Tour winner. Keefer won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour this year and led the Tour with nine top-10s en route to winning KFT Player of the Year.

William Mouw (70-1)

Prior to missing the cut in Utah, Mouw was on a hot stretch with a win and two other top-20s across his last four starts. The rookie ranks in the top-50 in SG: Off-the-Tee and putting, which is always a good combination to have at resort courses.

World Wide Technology Championship Bets: Top-10 Wagers

Lee Hodges (5-1)

Hodges will be making his debut at El Cardonal and his combination of accurate driving to go along with strong iron play should make him a good course fit. Hodges has only gained half a stroke per round on the greens in five tournaments this year, but three have led to top-10s.

Justin Lower (15-2)

There's plenty to like about Lower this week as he finished one shot out of a playoff here last year after finishing T23 the year prior, and he's also coming off a top-5 in Utah. Currently 110th in the FedExCup, these last three events will be critical for Lower to keep his card.

David Skinns (9-1)

Skinns is an easy golfer to overlook at 146th in the points list, but he does have three top-10s across his last 10 starts. He made the cut in his lone appearance here last year and has gained strokes on approach in six of his last seven events.

World Wide Technology Championship Bets: Head-to-Head Matchup

Jesper Svensson (-115) over Stephan Jaeger

We know that scores are going to be low this week, so it's easy to gravitate towards Svensson who ranks eighth in birdie or better percentage and SG: Off-the-Tee this year. Jaeger on the other hand is a lowly 155th off the tee and only has one top-30 across his last 11 starts. He's the antithesis of an ideal target for matchups.
