2025 Fantasy Outlook
Diaz returned to action last season after missing all of 2023 due to a torn ACL. The right-hander didn't pitch at the level of his remarkable 2022 campaign, but his 38.9 percent strikeout rate ranked 2nd among relief pitchers and was right in line with his career average (40.1 percent). Diaz only posted 20 saves, but he missed some time near midseason (shoulder injury, 10-game suspension) and finished most of the games he appeared in when healthy. He worked through a rough patch in May and had notable home (1.74 ERA) and road (5.96 ERA) splits, but his stability as the Mets closer was never in question. On average, the 31-year-old has been selected as the third closer off the board in early 2025 drafts. He warrants an early pick thanks to his 30-save and 100-strikeout upside. Read Past Outlooks

Injury classified as cramp
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after Wednesday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Phillies that Diaz left the game with a left hip cramp, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. "We'll see what we got," Mendoza said, in reference to Diaz's injury.
ANALYSIS
After retiring the side in the top of the ninth inning to preserve a 2-2 tie, Diaz came back out for the top of the 10th. He struck out Kyle Schwarber and then surrendered an RBI single to Nick Castellanos before summoning training staff to the mound. The Mets quickly removed Diaz from the contest, but Mendoza seemed to downplay the injury when speaking to the media shortly after the game concluded. That said, Diaz could be sent in for precautionary tests to determine if he's dealing with anything more serious than cramping, so fantasy managers will want to keep a close eye on his status heading into the four-game series in Washington that begins Friday.

Diaz missed all of last season after suffering a complete tear of his right patellar tendon while celebrating during the World Baseball Classic last March. The veteran closer threw several bullpen sessions towards the end of last season, but the Mets didn't rush him back since they weren't in playoff contention. The last we saw Diaz pitch in the majors, he struck out 118 batters over 62 innings for a strikeout rate north of 50%, but achieving those types of numbers again will depend on several factors. The obvious one is health, while the other two are Diaz's velocity and effectiveness of his slider. The slider didn't play well during his "down" season in 2019 and his ratios suffered. However, if the soon-to-be 30-year-old is throwing triple-digit heaters and wiping hitters out with the slider - look out. Monitor Diaz during spring training, but don't wait to long in the draft room to click his name, as he'll be among the top 3 closers off board soon enough.
