Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
The 49ers surprisingly doled out a three-year, $20.25 million contract to a backup tight end who averaged just 9.0 receptions, 79.5 yards and no touchdowns per season across four campaigns (66 games) with Jacksonville. Farrell's real-world value lies in his ability as a run blocker, but that translates poorly into fantasy utility. Starting TE George Kittle usually misses a game or two per year due to injury, but Farrell's limited skill set won't make him a desirable substitute in those scenarios. Read Past Outlooks
Catches one pass Sunday
Farrell brought in his only target for four yards in Sunday's 17-13 win over the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Starter George Kittle (hamstring) left the contest after scoring an early touchdown, opening up a chunk of playing time for the team's backup tight ends. Farrell finished with the most snaps played on offense (44), but it was third-stringer Jake Tonges (3-15-1) who absorbed Kittle's fantasy production despite logging 14 less snaps. It appears the 49ers view Farrell primarily as a blocking tight end regardless of where he sits on the depth chart. It is currently unclear how long Kittle will be sidelined for (if at all), but it appears that Tonges would be the fantasy beneficiary if the former can't suit up against the Saints next Sunday.

Farrell is coming off his most productive season as a pass catcher as he set career highs in receptions (13) and receiving yards (155), though he's still looking for his first NFL touchdown. The 2021 fifth-rounder played 398 offensive snaps as Jacksonville's No. 2 tight end behind Evan Engram and could fill the same role in 2024. However, 2023 second-round pick Brenton Strange and free-agent signing Josiah Deguara should also push for that job.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Potential late-round gem?
Bob McGinn of The Athletic believes Farrell could be an "unsung hero" of the 2021 draft class.
ANALYSIS
Farrell was a three-year starter at Ohio State, where tight ends were primarily tasked with blocking. He finishes his college career with only 34 catches, but a 4.81-second 40-yard dash time at Ohio State's pro day suggests Farrell may have some untapped athletic ability. It remains to be seen if he's selected in the NFL Draft or signed as a free agent afterwards.
