2025 Fantasy Outlook
The Colts kept Gay busy after signing him to a big contract during the 2023 offseason, but he didn't exactly reward them, missing half of his attempts from 50-plus yards (11-of-22) en route to an 82.1 field-goal percentage overall. He missed just one PAT and three field-goal attempts inside of 50 yards, but that ultimately wasn't enough to justify his salary, so the Colts released him in April. It shouldn't take long for Gay to sign with a team that's looking for a new kicker, given his career conversion rates of 85.5 percent on FGs and 96.3 percent on PATs. Read Past Outlooks

The Colts released Gay on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Gay inked a four-year, $22.5 million deal with Indianapolis in 2023 and was reliable as a kicker from inside 50 in 2024, so his release comes as a surprise. The decision to move on from Gay is seemingly related to the fact that he missed six of his nine field-goal attempts from 50-plus yards out last year, recording an 80 percent conversion rate overall (31 of 37) across 16 regular-season appearances. The transaction leaves Spencer Shrader as the only kicker on the Colts' roster.

Gay cashed in big after his impressive showings for the Rams in 2021 (94.1 FG percentage) and 2022 (93.3 percent), signing a four-year contract with the Colts last spring that made him the second-highest-paid kicker in terms of average annual value. He ended up tying for second among kickers in fantasy points thanks to his 41 field-goal attempts (second most), but he also had the second most FG misses (eight). To be fair, five of those misses came from 50-plus yards, and Gay also had eight makes in that range, making him more of a slight disappointment than a disaster. The contract should give him job security for 2024, and there's a chance for the Colts offense to take a big step forward with second-year QB Anthony Richardson at the helm.
The Colts made Gay one of the highest-paid kickers in league history this offseason, apparently impressed by his 92.5 percent conversion rate on field goals the last three years with the Rams. Gay also made 97.9 percent of his PATs for Los Angeles, and he went 12-for-15 from 50-plus yards. The issue is the team, not the player, as the Colts' offense was miserable last season and might need time to improve under incoming first-round pick Anthony Richardson, who had only one full season as the starting QB at Florida.
Gay built off his strong half-season with the Rams in 2020, missing just three kicks over a full year in 2021. On top of the accuracy, he has a powerful leg, though the Rams haven’t depended on it (six 50-plus-yard attempts in 24 games). Even so, Gay was the No. 3 fantasy kicker last year, and he should have plenty of chances again with the 2022 iteration of the Rams offense looking like one of the best yet under Sean McVay.
A 2019 fifth-round pick, Gay lasted just one season with the Bucs before landing on his feet last November, missing only two kicks for the Rams in their final seven games. It remains to be seen if his accuracy holds up long term, but leg strength is not a question, and it's mostly been chip shots that've given him trouble. Gay will need to fend off competition from Austin MacGinnis this summer.
Despite missing eight field goals and five extra points, Gay finished last year as the No. 4 kicker in fantasy scoring, tying for third in both FG and PAT attempts. He went 11 of 14 in the 40-49-yard range and five of eight from 50-plus yards, arguably atoning for his short-range inconsistency. However, the Bucs brought in Ryan Succop in September and he quickly supplanted Gay as Tampa Bay's kicker.
The Buccaneers at least were smart enough to wait until Round 5 in their most recent attempt to draft a kicker. Gay won't have the same leash we saw with 2016 second-round pick Roberto Aguayo, but the rookie does figure to have an edge over veteran Cairo Santos in training camp. Fantasy relevance can't be ruled out after the Bucs finished third in the NFL with 416 yards per game last season.

Gay was released by the Colts on Friday with two years remaining on a $22.5 million deal, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
At the time Gay inked his deal with the Colts during the 2023 offseason, it was the most lucrative ever for a free-agent kicker. Despite having won a Super Bowl and making a Pro Bowl during his time with the Rams before arriving in Indianapolis, Gay went on to convert just 82.1 percent of his 78 field-goal attempts in his two Colts campaigns, including only half of his 22 tries from 50 yards or longer.
