2025 U.S. Open: Five Former Wimbledon Champions in Action Sunday

Fourth-round play commences Sunday at the U.S. Open from the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. Both of last year's American runner-ups will be in action, but one could have a much tougher time adding to their home-country success Sunday, while a battle between former Wimbledon champions presents a potential upset opportunity.

All men's singles matches at Grand Slams such as the U.S. Open are best of five sets, while women's singles matches are best of three sets. A mix of players' previous hard court results, recent form and stylistic matchups can help pinpoint intriguing betting opportunities, both among favorites likely to cruise to victory and underdogs ready to pull off upsets. The aforementioned underdogs are highlighted in the Upset Alert section, the Lock It In section covers players who can safely be viewed as favorites, while the Value Bets section recommends enticing options in matchups that are considered closer to toss-ups.

U.S. Open Tennis Picks: Upset Alert

Tomas Machac (+185) vs. Taylor Fritz

It has been a great year at Grand Slams for American tennis overall, but Americans have largely been underperforming at the 2025 U.S. Open, and that trend could continue here with Fritz. His serve has been as reliable as ever, but Fritz's return game has left a lot to be desired in this tournament, as Fritz didn't sniff a break point in the first two sets of his third-round win over qualifier Jerome Kym, and Fritz has been pushed to four sets by opponents ranked outside the top 150 in each of the last two rounds. If the 2024 runner-up doesn't take his game up a notch, he'll be in trouble against the 22nd-ranked Machac, who hasn't dropped a set en route to the Round of 16. Fritz's 2-0 head-to-head edge won't provide much comfort for the fourth-ranked American, as one match was a clay-court five-setter in 2020 when Machac was still a teenager and the other was a hard-court match earlier this year in which Machac retired due to injury while leading by a set.

Marketa Vondrousova (+180) vs. Elena Rybakina

This is a fascinating clash of styles, as the crafty Vondrousova will do all she can to throw the big-hitting Rybakina off her game. Rybakina has more weapons and possesses the ability to pull away if she's hitting her spots consistently, but the tighter this match gets, the more Vondrousova's edge in clutchness could make the difference. The 10th-ranked Rybakina has fallen just short in numerous close matches this year, as three of her last five losses have come in third-set tiebreaks. Vondrousova, on the other hand, has a history of stepping up in big matches, with a 2019 French Open final, 2021 Olympic silver medal and 2023 Wimbledon championship on her resume. Injuries have dropped Vondrousova to 60th in the rankings, but she has no problems going toe-to-toe with the biggest names on the WTA Tour, having notched a win over No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka this year and just knocked off fourth-ranked Jasmine Paolini in straight sets in her previous match. Rybakina and Vondrousova have split two previous meetings, with Vondrousova taking their lone hard-court encounter, but they haven't faced off in over two years.

Honorable Mention

Adrian Mannarino (+235) vs. Jiri Lehecka

U.S. Open Tennis Odds: Lock It In

Jessica Pegula (-380) vs. Ann Li

Pegula's far from Bills country in NYC, but she gets plenty of support from the downstate New York crowd nonetheless and has given them plenty to cheer about with a 9-1 record in her last 10 U.S. Open matches. Last year's runner-up hasn't dropped a set en route to the fourth round and should once again enjoy plenty of crowd support, even against a fellow American. Li's already enjoying the best Grand Slam result of her career and came in with just a 9-14 record in major main-draw matches. The 58th-ranked Li could just be happy to be here, while the fourth-seeded Pegula has her sights set on greater goals as she chases the elusive first Grand Slam title that she came one match short of capturing here last year.

Honorable Mention

Novak Djokovic (-800) vs. Jan-Lennard Struff

U.S. Open Tennis Predictions: Value Bets

Barbora Krejcikova (-135) vs. Taylor Townsend

Townsend's having her moment as a singles player, as the 29-year-old doubles specialist is riding a wave of popular support following her post-match confrontation with No. 25 seed Jelena Ostapenko, who had some sour grapes after Townsend's 7-5, 6-1 second-round win. Townsend channeled that crowd support in a fantastic third-round performance against No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva, who let the crowd get under her skin in a poor performance reminiscent of the talented teenager's loss to Frenchwoman Lois Boisson at Roland Garros. Unfortunately for the 139th-ranked Townsend, who was just 16-30 in Grand Slam matches prior to this run, Krejcikova knows how to hold her nerve and handle a hostile crowd much better than the American's previous two opponents. The two-time Grand Slam champion has been in tremendous form at this tournament and hasn't minded playing the villain in wins over crowd favorites Victoria Mboko and Emma Navarro, both of whom were top-22 seeds. Townsend's extensive doubles success gives her volleying skills and understanding of angles that most WTA singles players lack, but Krejcikova is one of the few singles stars that brings those same doubles skills to the table.
